Yep atm I'm happy renting whilst I get settled into the 'real world'... and in any case putting a bit aside each month won't do any harm, even after 6 years the amount would just about cover the legal fees!
Anyway, I will do some proper research and see how things go over the next few years.

Here's a link to all the London Boroughs.

I think someone mentioned Barking being Zone 4, but I would have thought it was more like zone 6 tho I could be wrong.
Zones 1 to 3 will always be dearer as they're closer to Central London. However, looking at zones 5/6 will give you much more for your money, and depending on where you look you'll often find much nicer areas in those zones. You usually have more space, better air quality, more greenery, and larger homes. But whilst some places will be less dear, some zone 6 areas can be as expensive as zone 3. A lot of wealthy people live there as it's much nicer than inner London, which can be dirty and overcrowded etc. depends on the area, street etc...and that applies everywhere.
Another thing to factor in is travel costs as zone 6 travel tickets will be more than just zones 1-2 for example. On the upside to that is if you live near to good transport links, your journey into Central London from zone 6 (door to door) can actually turn out quicker than if you're in zone 3 and have a longish walk to the tube. Or at the very least there's just minutes in travelling time
