Identifying and stopping CPA before closing account

I want to change card provider, but I may have set up some CPAs. Most, I'm confident that I have stopped with the merchants, but it's possible that I've missed some backup cards, or something.

I wrote to my provider and they wrote back saying that they cannot help, as they have no way of identifying one. They also said that I would need to cancel them before closing the account, as if one is represented, they will reopen the credit card account to pay it.

I'm paranoid about this as a friend nearly ended up with a CCJ this way. He'd paid for a 3 year subscription, changed card provider, closed the account and moved home. The subscription was auto renewed and the card provider reopened the account, but obviously, they didn't have his contact details to tell him. Thankfully, someone forwarded the court summons to him and he was able to defuse the situation.
