Is this down to me or the line rental provider?

The landline's been out of order so BT ran a line check which is showing the problem as being in the property.
The phone appears to be working when I take the front off the socket and plug it into the master socket, but not working when plugged into the front of the socket. Which seems to indicate that there is a faulty connection somewhere inside the socket itself.
So would that be down to me or to BT to fix?

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

If you have nothing (I.E. extension) connected to the front plate then that should be BT's responsibility.

If you have wiring connected to the front plate then disconnect the wiring and test from the front plate again. If OK then it points to your wiring.

So how straightforward is it for your averagely incompetent diyer?

    Relatively straightforward.

If there are no extensions wires connected to the front plate, purchase a new front part on eBay and plug it in. Or do without. You could get an engineer visit but it hardly seems worth the hassle for something so trivial.

If there are extension wires, it is likely to be something plugged into one of the extensions that is putting a fault on the line. Unplug everything from extensions one at a time until you identify what it is. If you have Sky, check that you have not plugged the phone lead into the ethernet port on it, as that is a common cause of faults.

As an alternative - the extension cable can also be fractured and the phones/sockets good. Only a new cable will confirm if this is the case (assuming no test tools).
