Car Insurance

Options
Hi I have recently had my car stolen. the insurance company has asked for all drivers named on the policy for a copy of their driving licence. I have just realised my wife has had 3 points under SP30 which i didn't declare as I was unaware they were on her licence. Will this affect my claim as the car has been written off.

They might knock off the difference in premium if you'd declared it. You'll just need to show them and see what happens.

Or they may cancel the policy.

How much money are we talking?

More likely they'll reduce the payout by a percentage equivalent to the difference in premiums. So if the premium you paid was 10% lower than they'd have charged had they known about the conviction, they'll reduce the payout by 10%.

They can refuse to pay out at all if they would not have accepted your business at all had they known about the conviction (unlikely in the case of a single SP30) or if they can show the non disclosure was deliberate or reckless rather than just careless.

May be worth getting some quotes through their website now with and without the conviction to see what difference it makes under their pricing system. (It's the pricing system as it was at the time you took out the policy that really matters, but the current one will give you an idea of what to expect)
  • Thank you so much for this advice. I have told the truth as it was just a mistake and we will see what happens
