HSBC spoiled my credit history..

I was out of country for 4 months (jan- apr).. before leaving i did make sure that there is enough money in my Current account from where DD payments goes to CC etc..

when I return my both credit cards were showing 3 delayed payments...and my HSBC CC has been closed due to non payment

on calling HSBC they told me that they decided in JAN that they would not like me as customer and they supposedly sent me a letter (as per t&c) saying that my account will be closed in 30 days.. so after 30 days they closed all DD

and best thing is HSBC was still charging me regularly my account fees till June (the HSBC Bank Account Plus fees 10/month) in all these times ..

on sending a protest email to HSBC they removed delay payment from my CC history and returned money in saving account by check.. but they have not re-activated my HSBC cc and my delayed payment history is still there on Barclays card and I am afraid of applying for any new CC/loan because of it...

I was also planning to take a mortgage which i guess is going to be difficult now?? what can I do??

I'm suprised that HSBC allowed you to set up a direct debit from a savings account.

If they have closed your account then they will not reactivate your credit card.

To allow us to answer more fully I think you need to explain why HSBC closed your account - why did they not want you as a customer?

Sorry my mistake .. it was current account (Bank Account Plus) not savings account..

And they wont tell me why they dont want my current account with them...CS gave me a number (of some account review team ) but even they wont tell me.... only response.. we reviewed your account and decided that dont want it.. my guess: may be less transactions (I used this account mainly for DD payments to CC and NI only)

CC was not canceled with current account, it was canceled due to non payment as far as I am told (though it sounds funny to me as I had over 2k with HSBC in current account but they say my CC canceled because of non payment of 3 x 100 quid installments..(but they say it is different dept).. And it seems they dont have any problem as person with me as I still have business current account with them (Trading as) working normally and also business card (Master card) (though planning to move them after all this...)

The BBC's Working Lunch show had a story on HSBC's account closure program last October

"HSBC has 8.5 million current account holders in the UK, and told the BBC they are reviewing 270,000 accounts which are apparently being "operated in a manner contrary to the details given by the customer" of which 10% (27,000) had been written too and informed their accounts were being closed."

This is a clip of the relevant part of that show.

The comments on this page give some HSBC telephone numbers as well - no idea if they are currently valid or not.

If you had been running your account satisfactorily they most certainly would not close it. You obviously have done something and we are not getting the full story.

    Thanks Sunil..
this info was real help.. It means I am not alone and now I know the reason.. I did make a bit bigger foreign transactions (in 10s of K) to a foreign supplier....

but Still my question remain .. if they are charging account fees regularly.. are not they liable for providing services?? do i have chances if itake them to court??

I don't know about a court but suspect that your chances may not be that high (depends what you were asking for though?).

However, if you can't get a satisfactory response from HSBC, you could, as a first step, try talking to the Financial Ombudsman Service
