First of all i dont understand how these people on house build renovation programmes seem to do everything so cheaply !!!??? anyway - my question ..... we need to totally refurbish the kitchen in our house which is a 30 year old kitchen in a 100 year old house... we need a total strip out -- walls back to brick work ( solid wall house ) and replaced, new floors, ceiling, electrics ( probably ) .... weve had Howdens out to plan and cost a kitchen and i know that has come to £9k for c 12 + cupboards, dishwasher, fridge , freezer, microwave, twin extractor hood, any ideas what i should think of in terms of total installation costs?

Much of it depends on how much work you are willing to do (ripping out & donkey work).. and the contacts that you have for getting the specialised work down.
Appliance may be able to be sourced cheaper elsewhere (eg Appliances online - especially if combined with cashback both supplier\ manufacturer as well as cashback sites).. so don't be afraid to shop around and breakdown those component costings..
Don't be afraid to look for those bargains...0 -
In my experience its best to break down the work into manageable chunks, like StuC75 already suggested that its best to get the appliance sourced directly.
Naturally it all depends on how much work you are willing to do, more work you do, less you spent. I would recommend to get a builder to the building/plumbing work, source your own kitchen (usual suspect Howdens,, Ikea, Magnet etc) get your local kitchen installer to give you installation quote. Source your own works tops, appliances, sink, taps etc. You will be surprise how much you can save by just doing above.
Good luck0 -
Like you I'm always surprised by how little the building programmes on tv say they have spent on fitting out new kitchens, bathrooms etc.
I do remember years ago having a kitchen designer round & he mentioned how disappointed some customers were when they came in expecting the kitchen of their dreams for say the £3k they had seen advertised but were shocked by the total bill.
The total bill of course included all the things the original 'This Kitchen For £3k' ad had left out, such as worktops, sink & tap, side & end panels, handles, plinth boards, pelmet & cornicing etc. etc.
Anyway, to your kitchen, as with other posters suggestions here, source everything you possibly can yourself. When I had my recent kitchen refurb ( units from Benchmarx) I sourced all appliances myself, plus sink & tap & handles for units & saved hundreds of £'s by doing this.
It's difficult to know how much installation will cost without having proper insider knowledge of all work required, but my kitchen refurb labour charge was about £3700 which included tiling of walls & floors & other work pretty much what you say yours needs doing.
£400 of the total paid by me in the figure above was for the strip out of the old units etc. & hire of skip, so if you're able to manage to rip your existing kitchen out yourself it can save you handsomely. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Look at the thread I started about a company 'Direct Onlike Kitchens'. they have 50% off at the moment and have had very good reviews but there are few reviews. I'm not sure how good quality the kitchens are.0

I mentioned them because they are 'National'.0
