How much should I pay for a new carpet?

Perhaps you can clear up a point. I bought a carpet from CarpetRight and as normal paid the self employed fitter arranged thru carpertRight.
Happy with carpet , happy with fitter. But over a cup of tea ( I know the best way to keep everyone happy ) he told me that being independent, he could find himself fitting for carpetright in the morning and JL on the next job.
So easy question do JL outsource their work, or do they keep it all in house.0 -
JL always been outsourced in my experience (and that goes back 24 years so not a new thing) they do have high standards though. Allied not so good, of the 6-8 fitters who worked there when I did, I would have 3 fit carpet for me.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0

Hi
Thanks for continuing to post.
Paul the Painter - that's really helpful about the underlay, I'm sure that's what we had 'back in the day' and I'd forgotten completely. The main reason I don't like the bedrooms is that they have squashed down so much under the furniture and the oldest one makes the crinkling sound. For me the crumb will be the one to go for - others may prefer it more 'bouncy' - but I may have got swept along with the other posts and it could have been an expensive disappointment!
Also, armed with that knowledge I've found a page on the JL website that goes into a bit more detail of the various types.
Thank you so much once again - really looking forward to choosing now.0 -
Also consider heavy grade wool felt underlay. We have just replaced most of our old underlay with it and the difference over the one room which wasn't replaced is very noticeable.0

Not sure which brand we used as it was JL branded.
My advice would be if you go to JL you won't get the cheapest job, but it will be good, and good value (which is not the same as cheapest!) I would go for a JL branded 80/20 twist, you may be able to bring the job in 10-20% chapter by sourcing your own underlay and fitter, and finding a supplier for the carpet, but the hassle factor is large, and you don't have one person/company to point to and say "fix it"
Any idea if that TradePriced site is any good? Got a lounge/diner, hall/stairs/landing and three bedrooms to carpet so like to get best value for quality underlay and gripper rods.0 -
They were fine with me when I ordered some stuff from the about 2-3 years ago. Their own brand/generic flash underlay was what I ordered along with some sundries (gripper and door bars) you're paying less than half the cost of getting it through a"shed" what's not to like?Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0
