Staircase refurbishment

The staircase in our house really needs a makeover. We're not just talking a coat of paint but replacing the newel posts, spindles and banisters. I've been looking at a some web pages for firms that do this. Of course the before and after pictures on the web sites look great.
But I just wondered if anyone has any experience of having their staircase refurbished that they'd share with me. Maybe this will help me prepare a list of questions ready for when I start to get quotes and look at options.
Thanks

I got a friend to do mine a while back. All the parts were bought from Wickes. He did it whilst I was away on holiday, but made a mistake and did the whole lot in Pine. I specifically asked for Hemlock as it is a none knot wood.
Had to do a bit of a deal on a new fire for him, to get him to swap it all over. If you are looking at wood finish, I would seriously suggest Hemlock, it looks lovely. There are loads of staircase co's out there, but if you know of , or can get recommended a really good joiner, it will work out a hell of a lot cheaper for you, buying from Wickes for example.
