Im starting my new tarrif with the same company on 1/5/14 the old one ends on the 30/4/14. Normally I am in credit but I have a small amount of arrears when I submit my meter readings on the 30/4/14.
What I wanted to do was pay a one off payment to clear this amount but ive been told I cant as im on direct debit. Ive been told I can however cancel the direct debit on the 30/4/14 and make a payment to clear the amount and then reinstate my direct debit a few days later. The reason I thought of doing this is so I accrue some credit for the winter months. I have storage heaters and they are expensive. Ive already upped my direct debit accordingly. But just wanted to pay this small amount upfront.
What Im asking is - is it worth it or is it more hastel than its worth? I only thought of doing it so I can start afresh.. Has anyone done this and if so is has been an easy process? Or shall I leave well alone and let the debit amount come off the next months direct debit instead

I can see no reason why you can't make a payment to your account any time you like, by debit card or cheque. Why would the DD need to be cancelled?
Though why you see the need to anyway escapes me. You aren't changing to a new account, you are simply switching tariff-so your billing will continue as before. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
It may escape you - but I have storage heaters and by now im normally in credit so I have enough money in my account for winter 2014. Im not though.. . The DD needs to be cancelled as they said there isn't a facility for any one off payments when you choose to pay by DD. So I was advised to cancel it, pay the payment and start again.
Have you done this youself? Your reply didn't answer my questions.0 -
Which supplier are you with?
I know Npower have a section on their online account where you can make a one off payment by debit/credit card any time you like. I would have thought if they can manage it then other suppliers can, but I guess not.0 -

Hi I'm with EDF. I thought they had this facility. But when I used the chat option to ask the man I spoke to said they hadn't. Maybe I'll give them a ring on their free phone number and ask again. Like you I presumed all big companies had this facility.0 -

You can send a payment to EDF at any time without cancelling your existing DD arrangements

That's weird, as they do have the facility.
Log in to your online account and then on the left hand side of the screen you should see your address, account number, last bill date and account balance. Directly under that is a link to "make a payment", click on that and it takes you to a screen with the form to fill out with your debit/credit card details or alternatively it lists the account number and sort code if you'd rather send a bank transfer.0 -
Small debt with a supplier on roll-over to another tariff from that supplier ?
Not worth worrying about - You have a rolling account and on that account the only thing that changes is the product you are being supplied with.
BUT
Be aware that your D/D is likely to go up because the new product is dearer. Also make sure you put in a meter reading on the Final Day of your present deal - otherwise EDF will estimate the End & Start readings at the changeover0 -
Thank you all.... I was sure they had this facility. I will click on the link from footyguy and also look at what 2013yearofthehouse has said. Also dogshome, I have already upped the direct debit to conteract the new tariff and will be sending in accurate readings on the 30/4/14.
Thank you all for your help :-)0 -
As 2013yearofthehouse says, at the bottom of the grey box on the left hand side of "MyAccount".If you’d like to make a payment online then MyAccount is completely secure
You can make a payment of any amount, at any time0 -
Aside from this - Flow Energy seemed to be slightly cheaper at 2.49p per day rate unit less, 0.37p night rate unit less and 4.11p more for their daily charge (This was from there own site, the comparison site I used were totally different tariff charges).
But im a bit dubious of switching to this company as the daily charge is higher and ive read on here a few customers aren't happy with the Company. Edited just to say I wanted to compare companies without exit fees. The tarrif above is a fixed tarrif with Flow Energy.0
