Used Credit Card at ATM by mistake...

Hi,

I have an amazon (bank of america) credit card, that I pay in full several times a month. (to make use of the 2% on amazon and 1% on everything else).

I was rushing around town last week and accidently used my Credit Card to get cash from the ATM instead of my similar coloured Debit Card. I realised my mistake as soon as the card popped back out, I checked the damage online a few days later and the mistake cost me £5... not the end of the world, but as I'm sure you money savvy people agree a tad annoying. The balance on the credit card was paid in full a few days later, as it is now.

My question is, could I complain and get this £5 refunded? I know banks often refund charges at the slightest complaint. Would I get anywhere?

What do you have to complain about? The bank haven't actually done anything wrong, it was your mistake.

There is no harm in contacting them to explain and see if they will waive it as a gesture of goodwill but it definitely isn't a complaint.

You need a better approach to your card management:

    1. Select a different PIN for your credit card(s) to that which you use for debit cards(s). NB: If they're already different, then I'm lost for words!

    2. Hide the credit card(s) behind the debit card(s) in your wallet/purse, or put them in a different compartment.

As to your complaint...well don't bother! For one thing it's a ridiculous complaint because what you're saying is "although I was careless I want you to pay the price of my carelessness...please". For another, you'll be tying a complaints handler up when they could be dealing with a genuine complaint.

You may have a small residual interest charge on your next statement, depending on your timings.

You're generally presented with a "your card provider may charge a fee for this transaction" message when you use a credit card at an ATM. Were you really rushing about so much that you didn't see this message?

Maybe they will give you some compo too for the trouble and inconvenience they caused you ...
  • I'm certain there was no

"your card provider may charge a fee for this transaction"

The good will gesture was what I was talking about, of course it was my mistake. Maybe "complaint" was the wrong term to use.

I went into my overdraft by mistake once just because I was moving money around and forgot a standing order that was due to come out. They waved £90 just like that as a good will gesture. Not ridiculous to enquire if a bank would wave a fee like this one is it?

But based on your responses, I think I'll take Mattys advice and not waste my time.

In this case, I wouldn't see any harm in looking for a gesture of goodwill. You made a mistake - you'll own up to it and you can't lose anything.

As other posters have said, you're not entitled to it but no harm in asking. Mistakes do happen. Your CC company may be sympathetic.
  • You must really need that £5 to be debating it on here and then going on to make a claim for something that was your mistake anyway.

You obviously don't value your time.

Didn't you get a warning message that interest would be charged on the transaction? I am sure that I have started to use the credit card before and realised my error so not continued.

In my experience banks are lenient to the occasional mistake - but this is MBNA of course who tend to follow their guidelines tightly.

But, give it a go, they can only say no.
Never argue with an idiot. Especially not this idiot because I'm always right anyway.
