Auto Renewal

Hi,

I have automatically been auto-renewed for a PC tune up service from a company called My Security Center, to the sum of almost £90.

This was a renewal I did not know was going to take place and it has also been renewed through my old debit card details, even though that card was replaced by a new debit card. It appears the debit has still gone through.

I believe auto-renewals that are not clear to the consumer to be unlawful and unfair and I find it pointless for my bank to send me a new debit card to protect against fraud when debits can still be put through using old details!

Is there anything I can do to raise this further?

Many Thanks for any help!

Check their T&C thoroughly and see how to cancel.

Auto renewals are perfectly legal as is the banks allowing it to be done on an old card.

You need to be very careful when taking out any service now as auto renewal is common place.

Cancel it now with both the company and the bank so it doesn't happen again, then see if you can appeal to the company for a refund.
  • It's also a US company so discussing UK law in this case isn't relevant.

Not only is the use of an old card perfectly fine from a CPA perspective there is infact a service operated by Visa and Mastercard that those with a CPA should query before doing a reoccuring payment that has 3 possible responses:

    1) Use existing card number
    2) Use this new card number
    3) Don't take payment + reason code

So if they are following the most up todate process then they will have been given your new number anyway. Takeup of this service is still very low and old numbers are still fine.

You are correct that how the renewal will happen must be made clear to the users but lets be realistic, most people dont read the terms they agree to. Even those that do, how many realistically immediately put something in the diary for a years time to remember to cancel it and failing that, actually remember 12 months later there's something they must do?
