    Also a couple of questions.

I have been serverly neglecting myself, and I am missing a lot of standard facilities at home that I believe you are expected to be allowed to have. Like

Home phone/Broadband. I also miss things like a TV, Freezer, Kitchen untensils, cultery and plates, pans. Matress for bed.

Now my budget does not have any room in to obtain most of those things, so will an OR take that into account if I make them aware and allow me a budget to sort them out?

Also I have a mobile phone contract which expires this month in my ex wife's name, can I get a new one before I go BR, I believe I am allowed a reasonable one.

Plus I don't have stuff like Home contents insurance as I have nebver been able to afford it, will I be allowed to take it out and put it in my budget even though I don't already have it?

Also why does my tax code go to nil, does that mean I will be charged tax on all of my income for the year I am BR?

I would personally recommend purchasing them prior to going bankrupt by using the money you saved by not paying your creditors. This might delay your bankruptcy a little bit, keep the receipts in case your asked to prove your spending on acquiring these products. Keep in mind though, don't over indulge on what you buy. Get something at a reasonable price that will last for a while.

Yes, you can have a mobile but perhaps look at getting the existing phone unlocked and going with a pay as you go provider like GiffGaff? You could also look at some of the SIM only or contract phones on offer from TalkTalk as they are pretty cheap and some of the phones are nice :)

Yes, you can budget for home insurance along with any other basic things you've not been able to afford previously. Please remember that bankruptcy isn't about being on the bread line, you are allowed a SOA that will give you a reasonable standard of living. Anything beyond standard living expenses will go into an IPA if you have over £20 surplus and aren't on benefits.

The Tax goes to NIL as HMRC doesn't claim the money monthly like previously in that tax year, it will goto the OR so don't go spending the money! put it to one side until they start asking for it.
  • Also, if you need internet, try the library or CAB.

Hi Michael - sorry I am a week late, I only just read your post. All of the advice with regards to the BR that you have recieved on this board is sound - I know, that lovely lot helped me too.

The thing that grabbed me was you saying that you lack items such as a freezer, a mattress and a bed. I would like to suggest, as you are ex-service, that you give SSAFA a call. They may help you to obtain these items. I don't know what they are like in your area but any dealings I have had with SSAFA in the past has been nothing but positive with kind non-judgmental ex-service people trying to help.

    Hi Michael
Just picked up your post. Hopefully you've got a few more things sorted and are feeling a bit better.
My hubby is ex-forces and RBL paid his BR fees back in 2011. They also paid my BR fees last year (50% RBL, 50% by his former regimental association).
RBL will also help you with the basics you need. When Hubby was struggling in a similar way to yourself, they took him food shopping and paid for it (they even bought cat food for he kitty he was looking after) and made sure he got his affairs in better order, helped him with benefits etc. Do use their services because that's what they're their for.
We have resolved to donate time and money to them when we're back on our feet. They've been marvellous.
Good luck. You'll get through this.
    xx
