Just received my electricity bill.

It's the end of the year one, where they tell you how much you've used over the last 12 months, and how that usage compares to the previous 12 months.

It then says how much they want to change the monthly payments, if at all.

This is how it pans out.

12 months ago, they estimated I would use just over £235 worth of electricity, this last year.

In actual fact, I've used less than £180 worth.

I've actually used 21% LESS than last year.

Throughout the over 4 years I've been here, I've NEVER been in debit.

Indeed, at the moment, I'm over £10 in credit.

Despite all this, they want to INCREASE my payments by £48 per year

Were you on a two-tier tariff? Have you accommodated standing charges in your projection?

(Edit: just realised electricity-only. If you were dual fuel you could be affected but as tha'ts your electric then the introduction of DSCs is not the issue. You're correct - just a bonkers projection from them.)

    Daily standing charge.

There is mention of a Daily Standing Charge, which is, apparently, reduced a bit, due to my having Paperless Billing.

Given how little you appear to use I suspect the introduction of standing charge on all tariffs is probably whats pushing your costs up. What is your annual consumption in kwh?

    I'm not sure.

The previous bills were in "units", whereas the latest bill is in "kWh".

However, it does say "Your estimated annual usage 1,040.00kWh"

EDIT: I think the units are kWhs, which would make the last 12 months 1,042.

Yes, I'm pretty sure units are kWhs.

It says on the latest bill:-

"kWh stands for kilowatt-hour. It is the unit used to measure electricity and is recorded by your meter."

If they're saying you used 1042kwh last year and are estimating 1040kwh in the next year, then that would suggest, since usage is roughly the same, that it's their prices (per kwh or standing charge or both) that have changed at some point or are expected to at some point in the next year (depending on what tarriff you're on).

It could be that 1042kwh cost about £180 last year, but 1040kwh will cost about £228 in this next year. Have they provided the calculation breakdown showing why the same amount of electricity will cost more money?

......or of course they could just be being illogical unfortunately! You can ask them to reduce it back though.

They're projecting my costs, over the next 12 months, will be £240.

Given that, last year they estimated £235, I fail to see how they can justify increasing my payments by £48 for the year

I'm going to insist on it.

[STRIKE]But 1,000 kWh will cost you at least £240 on all current Scottish Power tariffs.

You must have been on an older tariff before the standing charges were aligned across tariffs. To pay £180 for 1,000 kWh would have meant a tier 1 contribution of only £40, whether through an odd base price or an odd discount. All current tariffs charge more than £90.[/STRIKE]

Never mind. Just noticed your obnoxious footer. I'm out.
