Help with Baxi Back Boiler part name please
Options
Hi,
I saw a few helpful threads here, but a couple I could have revived and added to were closed hence a new thread.
Apologies if it's a bit vague, but I've only got second hand information from a relative.
A relative has had their Baxi Bermuda serviced. It seems for a few years the BG staff that have serviced it have been writing 'part no longer available' on their service report. It seems the relative has been advised or encouraged that they need a whole new system as this part isn't available.
The relative seems to think that it's some kind of sealed unit that can't have the covers removed to replace or repair individual parts. My relative seems to think that replacing a part on a back boiler that has been around 20-30 years is like performing brain surgery while blindfolded.
It also seems that BG have checked the system against current regulations and mentioned 'flueing'. The system has been in place since the house was built, but it seems it's having some new regulations used retrospectively to condemn it or to get a sale.
I've seen comments online that while the old Baxis were not the most efficient systems were reliable bits of kit that functioned fine and that more modern ones aren't a patch on the old ones, which could be said of a lot of things manufactured these days.
A cynic could think that there's more money to be made by replacing the whole system than replacing an individual part.
The relative said the part that's not working to optimal performance is some valve that supplies gas and it's 'slow' to switch off.
Can anybody suggest what such a part on a Baxi back boiler with gas front fire might be called?
I thought once I knew what that part was called I could search online, as it seems that some parts are still available for this model Baxi.
It would be useful to know what this part is called before I start looking around for another Gas Safe Engineer to look at the boiler and do the work.

My MIL is in the same position as you.
She has a Baxi Bermuda 552GF which has been serviced and protected under the Bg Homecare scheme for donkeys years.
Like you on each service they have noted "parts not available". This has not been a problem so far because the boiler has not developed any faults.
Having searched the internet and found some parts are available we have decided this renewal to ditch them and use a local RGI.
Is the part you mention a Gas Valve? This seems to be still available here

as are other parts.0 -
Bg don't have a catagory of 'parts not available', they use either 'reduced service list' or 'obsolete'. Very simple to ask the bg engineer to show you the list of parts available and not from the manufacturer on their laptop. It would be pretty negligent of bg not to inform you if some parts were unavailable and I would imagine you would be pretty upset if that came to light several years down the road when you did need an obsolete part.
I would guess the fault on the original post is the boiler thermostat, usually available but the problem is more likely that the heat exchanger is so scaled that the thermostat cannot get an accurate temperature reading.0 -

Yes, all gas engineers have to apply current gas safety regulations to ALL appliances and installations, regardless of age. Something could be installed today and not to current standards next week, we don't make up the rules ourselves! If it is 'not to current standards' then it's nothing to worry about, if it's at risk then it will have been left turned off.
Hard to know what part as there are many different models of Baxi Bermudas, some parts are obsolete, some aren't. BG don't say you can't get parts anymore, they say you can't get some parts any more, which is important to tell the customer.0
