Any Painters around?

Options
I'm in need of some advice please.

Years ago I pained my fence in a mahogany colour. The fence was glossy and what I describe to be a 'solid' look.
It is time for me to repaint the fence & my front door. A friend recommended that I should use a wood stain, but I have read that wood stains have a transparent look, if this is the case then I don't want that look.

I'm wanting my fence & front door to look slightly glossy & a 'solid' look, nothing transparent.

I have had a look at Ronseal 10 year weatherproof & the video on their site, shows me that it is slightly shiny (glossy) and it produces that 'solid' look. However, I don't have much money and it is quite pricy @ £14 for 750ml.

Can anyone recommend me a brand of paint for my needs, that will produce a slightly shiny & a 'solid' look please?

"stains" as you say will just stain a timber so you will see the timber through the stain. If you want a solid colour I would suggest Architectural solignum. Its easy to apply but you will need to make sure the existing surface is prepared (sanded and de greased). Its easy to apply with a brush and should only need re-coating every 5 years or so.

I'm not a decorator but I am a Joiner and much of my work is on Churches,Grade II Listed properties and I can say its excellent stuff. Its not cheap but a little goes a long way. With regards to the fence you must use the Solignum when the moisture content is low so mid summer.

You can get water based and spirit based Solignum, if you choose to use it I would use the spirit based one as it will soak into the timber rather than sit on the top which the water based one will. The finish is a "satin" finish (semi shine) and its a "solid" look which when you look from an angle you see the waves of the timber grain but not the colour of the grain...

Thankyou very much! You are describing the finish that I want perfectly.

Jacobean seemed a little dark. I am wanting a red shade of mahogany ( I really wish I could remember the paint that I had previously used).

Solignum sounded perfect because its opague which would give me the 'solid' look and nothing transparent. Shame the colours aren't a bigger selection.

In the bedec range, could I also use a different shade to paint my table & chairs, or wouldn't it be a suitable product?

This summer I am wanting to paint my fence mahogany & paint my wooden hammock, table & chairs a different colour.

With regards to the fence there isn't a water based paint on the market that will put up with the fluctuation of moisture content from Winter to Summer.Any waterbased finish will crack or peel within 18 months.

With an exterior door its not so bad because the moisture content will be fairly stable.

all bedec exterior paints are highly flexible and resistant to cracking and peeling , i first used the multi surface paint 6 years ago doing windows on a south facing wall, previously the owner had had dulux weathershield u/c + gloss and had only got 3 years out of it , apart from a couple of hairline cracks , they still look good

btw , you can use the msp on furniture

If its possible I would try and get hold of a sample pot if they do them so you can see exactly what the colour will look like on the fence/ door.

    Good luck .......
