flea treatment for older Cat recommendation

I have just rehomed a cat from a friend of a friend, who is moving abroad. The cat is 13 years old and does not regularly go to the vet at all, apparently it has always made her very nervous and she hasn't been taken since, especially as she has gotten older.

I would like to buy a spot on treatment for fleas and/or worming for her. I do not want to take her the vet unless I really need to at the moment as I don't want to add to the stress of her being rehomed.

I used to use Advocat for my young tom a few years ago, from the vet. I don't really want to buy it from a dodgy site non-prescription, but I found it was the only thing that kept fleas off him. I had been using frontline but it stopped working after a couple of years and really don't want the house or cat covered in fleas again.

Can anyone recommend another flea/worm treatment that works well until I feel she is ready to go the vet? Or another way to get a prescription - I am unsure if there is a service where a vet will issue one over the phone? Maybe completely incorrect but just looking for a solution at the moment.

I will be buying a brush for her - she is fluffy but not long haired and don't want to put her through the stress of bathing or spraying.

Thanks

You don't need a prescription to buy Advantage....Animed normally the cheapest.

I would say if she hasn't been to the vets for years then it is time to take her for a check-up. Don't postpone - if she is healthy then she will cope and a bit of a treat when you get home will calm her down. It only takes a few minutes and will find any big problems. Thirteen is still young enough to have many happy years (one of my cats was pts last year at 22 and another hits 24 in a couple of weeks). A major benefit can be sorting out teeth problems before serious problems set in.

Thank you for the information/recommendation on Advantage PaddyPaws. I'll pick some up or order some. I live in a rural area, and know she'll pick up fleas easier than when she lived in the city so I want to get on it asap.

As i said I have taken the decision not to take her to the vet as at the moment, z.n; she is constantly hiding, I had a cat who at 18 I took to the vet, and she was a lot less nervous, had been with me since she was 12 weeks and that trip was the end for her; it traumatised her so much so passed away within 2 days, so I am not prepared to do that to another animal which i have been entrusted with. It's easy to say take her if your animals have been with you for a lifetime and are used to going regularly. Thanks for your comments but I do understand the benefits of taking an animal to the vet, being an experienced owner; I felt I had covered my reasons without need for a response on that point on my initial post, as I knew someone would feel the need to still say something. I am not an irresponsible owner.

You can also buy Drontal wormer from the same site without prescription.

Sorry OP if my comment offended. I do understand, really. I have been surprised my my old boy's ability to cope with vet visits at his age and was simply suggesting that it might not be as bad as you feared, I have also found it very difficult to get really good wormer/flea stuff without a vets checkup-generally they insist but my local vet doesn't charge for the checkup. I use stronghold-we have mites in our area.
