i can see that i'm not the only one disagreeing with the OP, but the people who do disagree are being very polite and technical about it. but it's really, very 'nitpicking' isn't it? To argue on the grounds that this specific terminology - this particular kind of bedding isn't included in their exclusions. even if you must insist you are right on this basis, you would think it was wiser to err on the side of caution rather than expecting judge and jury to back you up when the time comes.

I have bought bedding sets in debenhams before and to be fair, they warn you at the point of sale that they are non-returnable once opened. why do you have to be all weird about your purchases and open them in the shop 'to test the material' and then take it home and open it up and then try to return it? why not just ... not do these things then you won't have these kinds of headaches to deal with later? a good start might be knowing what size the bed is that you're buying bedding for.

i just don't approve of this kind of behaviour, it seems so over the top and then trying to blame it back onto the company for not 'honoring your rights'. i feel that consumer rights are a good safety net to have for when retailers are not treating you fairly, but they're not there to be misused, or flouted. it doesn't mean you can do whatever you want and then expect the safety net to be there. some moderation, please?

but i'll be fair; perhaps it wasn't you that opened this bedding set to test the material in the shop - perhaps it was someone else. maybe you can point this out to the sales person before you pay so that they can make a note on the receipt? Or pick another package? Or perhaps, you really were not aware and honestly believed you can return these opened items without any problem.
well, now you know that you cannot. why can't you just accept your error and move on - or like someone says, try to sell them on ebay, instead of getting so vehement about this and considering taking matters further - even legal action - it appears, judging by the responses to this thread. but seriously? over a bedding set?

i'm sorry, but this reads like someone who has far too much time on their hands - as do i, for replying to this.

Some of the bedding sets can be up to £150 so its not necessarily a small amount of money we are talking about.

Debenhams offer returns policies to encourage customers to purchase on the spot and be able to return items if they are not suitable.. they need to be very clear if an item is excluded as it will influence whether a customer makes a purchase.

Also, I don't think it's weird to check a material before buying an item.. it's just common sense.

Ultimately whether or not you "approve of this kind of behaviour" really doesn't matter. If the customer has right to return the item as per the contract, they are free to enforce those rights in any way possible.

Well, as the stated exclusions are "Quilts, duvets, pillows and mattresses" and debenhams are now stating that bedding sets are also excluded, wouldn't it have made a lot more sense and have been far more open if they simply stated that bedding was excluded?
Using this one word would cover everything that is already in their written policy and also everything that they are now saying is also excluded despite it not eing stated anywhere.

Way around it - order the same set from the website

    Return it unopened to store
And return the opened one under the 7 day rule for online purchases

I do think that this poster has a very good point though.

The idea of this site is for 'Consumer Rights' However I have found in a number of posts, usually by the same culprits, that they try to weave their way around what is right and wrong, what is acceptable and what is not. These posters also then try to quantify their argument, that what is morally wrong, sometimes even Illegal, is totally acceptable and should be encouraged.

    Examples have been things like....

Dropped an Ipad on getting it out the box ( own Fault) - Answer Take it back and say it was damaged on receipt.
Child broke an electronic game - answer, order another one and then send it back as damaged for full refund.
Couldn't get a refund on a product from Argos as over 12 months old _ Answer Buy another one and take damaged one back and get refund.
TV broke and Tesco wouldn't swap it _ Answer, take it back to another branch, no receipt and get them to swap it.

And people wonder why they are put under the spotlight when they want to return something!

But yes, could be, but there are more prolific ones who will remain nameless at present, but are always found lurking CR thread, more than anywhere else.
