"Direct Debit details incorrect"

Applied for a Halifax Clarity card, got card sent to me. I thought I set up DD bank details fine, but then I get a letter saying DD details are incorrect. There is one digit wrong on the account number, I swear I did it correctly. I think same thing happened years ago but with a Nationwide account. Is this a standard policy of saying you've put an incorrect number down, to prevent fraud and make you actually ring them up about it?

Or can I go online (I also set up online banking with them) and re-enter the details there? Don't really want to spend 20 minutes or whatever on phone waiting and waiting.

    I don't think it's a "standard policy", and I don't see why you couldn't do this online.

Personally, I always use copy&paste or drag&drop for important details and never enter them manually.

Gave it 5 minutes and rang off. Will try again online I think. I wandered if anyone else had experienced banks pretending you've put a detail in incorrectly, as a sort of anti-fraud thing. I'm sure, with the Nationwide, they put my address down as slightly different to what it was. So I had to re-contact them to correct it.

At 24, i must have opened atleast 20 bank/saving accounts and credit card applications, in the past 6 years and not once have i come across this so called method of "anti fraud" measure.

Sure ive lived at my address well past 15 yrs but ive always been on the electoral register.

Most ask for your postcode which generates the address. Nvr had to provide identification or proof of address.
