Hello there. Non techie minded Jazee here. I have a new pc and the McAfee security is due to run out in a couple of days. I've looked in the utilities board and there is a link to free McAfee for bank customers but is says forumites are sceptical.

Any advice please on what I should do, just pay the £40 or so??

Thanks in advance for any replies.

+1 for Avast. Do not pay £40 for McAfee. There is no reason to pay for anything but if you did McAfee would not be high on the list.

Do not pay for McAfee via their link far cheaper from Amazon.
Kaspersky and Webroot are alternatives too.
I was put on to Webroot as data is based on their servers and checks yours for comparison. Its available for 60% off too making it $30 or about £20 for a year on 5 PC's

Kaspersky Internet Security free for Barclays bank customers or pick up an older licence valid 12 months from first use on current KIS 2013 / 2014
    via ebay .

Best to uninstall McAfee (McAcrap) before you install a new anti virus say free AVAST!

Uninstallation using the Windows Add/Removal tool can often be insufficient to remove all traces of the programme.

Use McAfee's own removal tool downloadable from here

Another question then, when I choose the free download in AVast is takes me through reg clean pro or something, finds errors then won't let me proceed without paying. What am I doing wrong.

you're clicking on an advert, not avast download, see download latest version button on the right.

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

when installing pay careful attention to untick the bundled chrome installation, and select the free avast, not the 1 month full trial.

    while you're here:

it's a good idea to create your windows disk, and do a disk image backup http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
