Meriva power steering failure

I have a 58 plate Meriva recently the power steering has been failing and it's happening more often. Even if I'm going straight the eps light comes on and the only way to get it back is to turn off the engine. I have read online that this is a common fault and had been on watch dog and vauxhall made a statement to say that anyone with this problem can have it fixed for free. Just wondering if any one else has has this problem
If i knew the answers to all the questions i wouldn't be on here :p

Yes, I had a Meriva with the problem also my daughter.
In my case it failed at around two years old and the whole column (that's what is required) was replaced under warranty. At that time Vauxhall were still denying there was a problem! Soon after my car required a new steering rack, under warranty, another known fault!
My daughter's Meriva was two years out of warranty but had three years of main dealer history and had been serviced at an independent subsequently. Fortunately receipts had been retained.
This failure was after the Watchdog programme and Vauxhall putting their hands up about it.
She contacted Vauxhall customer services and they arranged for steering column replacement, free of any charges, at her local Vauxhall dealer.
She also has a friend who experienced the same problem. She also contacted Vauxhall and the same was arranged. That Meriva had only an independent service history.
It was a torque sensor in each case and the fault should be stored in your e.c.u..
So contact Vauxhall in the first instance. I don't know if a service history is a factor but in the three cases I've quoted it was present and there were no questions asked about it.
    Mine was a 2008, daughter's a 2006 and her friends a 2005.(08, 06, 55)
