Is your sister expecting anything in return, any repayment or interest in the property?
How would you manage the costs of owning a flat in a council managed building? Any major repairs could cost you the best part of £15,000 again.0 -
Under the right to buy I can purchase my flat for £15,000, because the right to buy is coming to an end I do not want to lose the opportunity to buy my flat
My Sister is willing to give me the money to buy my flat but I am left wondering if this could impact my benefits, would the DWP cut my benefits if it perceived I had this sort of money at my disposal, my Sister would for the purposes of buying the flat have to transfer the money in to my bank account, would I be able to justify this to the DWP or would they take it as being my money and cut my benefits?
It is perfectly possible for your sister to gift you the money.
It is not possible for the deeds to be in her name. They must be in the name of the tenant who is eligible for the discount.
Why don't you give the council a call and find out exactly the process? It might be that they need a declaration from your sister that she has gifted you the money (just like a normal house purchase)
Since the money is for the purchase of a house as long as you have documented evidence of the gift then it should not be a problem as regards your benefits, although the sight of it in your bank account may be the cause for an investigation.
That is why it is important that you speak to the council and see how this should be achieved.0 -
I think you wouldn;t be eligible for Housing Benefit once you owned the flat. Housing Benefit is only paid on rented properties.
However, you may still be entitled to Council tax Benefit and DWP benefits.0
