i'm surprised that there has been comment that CS isn't great, as i imagined it would be above & beyond the Credit Card service i get from them.

i dont think i travel enough to make the Charge Card worthwhile for me.

i have previously had the HHonors card, and as a result am a Gold HH cardholder, and certainly have had some nice upgrades with Hilton.

Unless you are the upper tier Centurion I dont think CS is any different, certainly not on the account servicing side. Maybe on Travel or Concierge.

I had an email once from Travel and they had accidentally used their Centurion email signature. I've used it, the Platinum and a credit card number and never noticed any meaningful difference. The only thing I have noted is that out of hours Platinum calls to Travel say its for emergencies only whereas Centurion doesnt. In practice neither had any issues doing anything out of hours.

Of cause once they log in they see I am not Centurion but never been told I had to redial or anything like that either.

I'm very pro Amex, and have a Plat charge card. Their CS is second to none. I had a Barclaycard and the person i spoke to couldn't understand I wanted to close my account. Amex are based in Brighton, all their staff are well trained, and I've only had one problem in 4 years.

Yes it's a £450 charge, but I just got a £50 spend credit for a Top London restaurant, I get the small shops discount yearly. Nothing about status, but when people know you're paying on a Amex they become even more friendly. And i called Amex to close my gold, and they credited me £5.00 for being on the phone for 10 mins.

I would rather go with a company that suits my needs, then a company that cannot understand what I'm saying. You'll hear people say "not everywhere takes it" and "don't you have to pay for it" I just reply "everywhere i shop takes it, and so what"

All the major shops take it, the little tandoori i use takes it, I'm trying to convince my local Chinese, but he's not having it lol. He calls me Amex when i walk in now.

If you're asking about the Annual fee, then its most likely not the card for you. For me, not having a "limit" and knowing I have to pay it off, means i will owe no one nothing. I find it a great, but like i said at the start I am pro Amex and everything goes on the card that can.

Do you use it overseas? Do you know what they charge you for foreign spend - or does my question also indicate it's not the card for me?

You do have a limit - they just don't tell you what it is.

He does have a point in regards to the fee, if you're questioning it and it's benefits then it isn't the card for you.

I personally question the benefits as insurance wise my personal insurance appears better, I already get concierge with Ten Lifestyle and lounge access is attainable if you fly business or first.

This isn't a card for a frequent traveller (business or otherwise), it's for the infrequent traveller that enjoys the perks that come with the card, also it's aimed at those that put business expenses on the card and don't care for the fees.

I did apply for and get the Gold card and I'm still at odds as to whether I should have gotten the Platinum card instead but for where I'll be spending (all foreign spend), it's better to have the Gold rather than the Plat.

I get where you're both coming from - but isn't that rather the point of this site - to make everyone question the value of the items they are spending on?

Ultimately - it's personal preference. I held the account for a year - and made good use of the OW Sapphire status - but it was before it went to 450 ... and the bonus I got on opening made it effectively free for me.

When it came time to renew - I looked at the benefits - I was now a BA silver ... so the Marco Polo was no use (and was, in theory, limited to a year anyway) ... and the insurance - as you say - I had better elsewhere.

    So I closed it.

Still an AmEx customer though - and I do appreciate the customer service people. I had one agent call me a 'long standing family member' the other week which made me chuckle.
