Harveys - vent - warning keep away

Options
A delivery arranged for Harveys today.

Delivery of a 3 2 and 1 sofa, we live in a small village with a narrow lane, and a very steep hill to the house. When I arranged delivery, I explained all of this to them and advised for them to deliver in a small box type van.

Well this morning they turned up in a huge 7.5 ton lorry, and struggled to get up the hill. They did get at least 100 yards away from the drive, they then said they would turn round and reverse up so the back end was by the gate.

So we left them to it and they just disappeared and never said a word.

We called the customer service office and explained to them what had happened, and they said the would get in touch with the drivers.

The drivers said they didnt want to deliver as so steep and couldnt get up the drive, but we had already said, they could drop it at the bottom of the drive and we would take them up ourselves. The drivers said they just wanted to go to the pub.

So I was back onto customer services, after another argument and them just saying to rearrange delivery to another date, but again that is not going to solve it.

Just so annoyed as the sofas were only about 200 yards away from the house, and they never said a word and just drove off.

So you expect them to send out a seperate van and crew just to suit your narrow road?

Do you know how much that would cost?

Did you offer to pay them 2 extra wages and an extra van?

Driver probably gave up struggling to get within reach of your house and had to drive off to try to catch up on the time wasted trying to meet your special circumstances.

    Ridiculous arguement!

Offer the drivers a £20 drink between them and they will deliver it into your house

Disagree, if the OP clearly explained the issues and recommended the type of vechile to use if the company decides to ignore this then its at their peril.

They should send it out again.

They're not asking for special arrangements, or an extra van. They're asking for delivery. The OP advised the store that a large lorry might not work, and the store accepted the warning. What else is the OP meant to do?

If they've paid for the order and delivery, why should they pay the drivers more to do the job they're already being paid for?
  • Quite agree that if the company was informed about the access issue, it is up to them to sort it out. In these circumstances I'd make sure that the issue was set out in a writing/email exchange so that there is no nonsense later!

  • It could be a misunderstanding - 7.5 ton is not a 'huge lorry', most people working in transport would actually call a 7.5 tonner a 'van'. If one of those really won't get in to the address, they may regard that nothing will fit and so they are unable to deliver. And crews may be on some kind of bonus for not damaging the truck, so won't try to squeeze in if they feel it won't fit

We did explain to the company about the size of the road and it was agreed that it would come in a small van. That is not the problem, they got up the road in the big van they just didnt get the sofa out of the lorry and walk it up a driveway about 200 yards from where they had parked it. If they had said they didnt want to carry it, we would have got friends to help carry up drive and into house. The fact is they just disappeared without saying anything at all.

Why should I keep away from Harveys just because they wouldn't deliver your furniture? Bit of an over dramatic thread title don't you think?
