Hi everyone,

I just wondered if someone could help please?

I'm very new to gardening and have sown some seeds in a hanging basket, placed it on a sunny windowsill and used polythene to cover it as I don't have a propagator or greenhouse...hopefully so far so good(!?)

The reason for my post is that there are now a couple of little seedlings but I'm not sure at what stage I should remove the poly bag? Should I wait until they're all through, or now that there are signs of seedlings should the bag come off?

Many thanks! :)

As soon as you see the seedlings give them light and air so yes remove the bag.

Great, thank you! Everyone keeps telling me I'm mad and should buy them ready planted or get plugs, but I want to see if I can actually do it from seed! :)

Well the correct way would have been to sow them in a seed tray or even a flowerpot rather than sowing them straight into the hanging basket but I don't suppose that it makes that much difference as long as they are growing.

Oops! Thanks...I'll definitely remember that for next time!

As Wellused said, that would have been the correct way, according to the books ;) However, now that you have done, why not use the opportunity to monitor it. See how it grows, you never know you might just have saved yourself quite a bit of time in the long run.

What I will say is write down now what you have sowed and how you did it today, where you placed the hanging basket. If you can remember when you sowed the seeds, what you sowed, when you took the bag off. If it works well and you get a nice full hanging basket then you already know what to do next year :T

Oh and btw you are not mad at all, you can call yourself a gardener ;)

A sunny windowsill is no different from a greenhouse as far as seedlings go. I have not got a greenhouse either but have seedlings on every windowsill in the house.
