    According to that link, an employee in such a situation would be paid on a W1 /M1 basis, so previous earnings won't come into it. :)

    Sounds a bit strange. Earn 3k over 6 months then get a new job and start off from 0 (effectively increasing their personal allowance by 3k)

    Thanks for all your replies, there are still a lot of questions I have regarding the systems so am booked to see an accountant tomorrow who can hopefully run the payroll for me.

    Apart from payroll stuff, there is a lot to learn about being an employer.

    https://www.gov.uk/employing-staff has some very basic info. Are there any courses locally for new employers?
