To add a twist, don't most insurance policies require you to be the registered keeper - it sounds like the friend is the registered keeper, but not insured. Either way, the op should keep the keys secured so the owner can't use it until he's got a license and insurance.0

As a simple answer no, almost all are comfortable with you not being the registered keeper however they are interested in who it is and their relation to you.
Spouses/ parents are fine, lease companies most are ok with but when you go outside of that the level of acceptability starts to go down but there are insurers that are happy to insurer you no matter what the relationship is between you and the keeper0
