Getting a 0870/1 number

As evil as these numbers are, can anyone see a problem with getting a free one from http://www.gtitelecom.com/incoming/0871/ (a link followed from the NoTo0870 web site) and giving the number to banks/insurance comanies etc... when they take a phone number.
Is it as 'free' as they say, or has my cynical mind overtaken?

It'd be nice to get the banks back. For e.g. I had a message left for me on our answerphone saying, 'it's Marjory from the bank, please call 0870 .....' No mention of the bank name at all.
It was, in fact, A&L, a bank which I have had no dealings with at all. If I hadn't known about the saynoto0870.com site, I probably would have phoned that number, increasing A&L's profits in the process.

Some of these 087x providers do require a certain number of incoming calls via the 087x number each month/year otherwise you will get disconnected (they may even charge an admin fee or something for these numbers that don't have that many people calling them) but you have to read the t&c fully and I'd recommend asking them to make sure.

Another provider of these rip-off 087x numbers is ContactNumbers.com (obtained via the adverts on SayNoTo0870 website).

I've been thinking of getting one of these 087x numbers to pass on to those companies only that have 087x contact numbers themselves (Sky is main example as all their numbers are 0870) mainly for revenge. I'm not too bothered yet about 0845 (I still try to avoid ringing them though) as I know these companies don't make a profit from these calls.

Most people that get one for these reasons hardly get money from it. On Sayno... a provider of these said thst several forum members hag earned less than the cost of a stamp in months.

I think it much more useful to get an 0871 number to divert calls to a mobile, either UK or foreign so as to call them cheaper.

Andy, it's not the money I'm that bothered about (although it would be nice but like you said chances are I wouldn't get anything). It was more about getting revenge and the added expense for these other companies (like Sky) to ring an 0871 number!

Thinking about it though, in the end it'll still costs us more as they'll just put their prices/charges up to to make up for any loses incurred as a result of them calling us on an 087x number.

We're just lucky that sayno exists as I know from my point of view it has saved me a fortune that's why I've even contributed to them!

I've been using these numbers for a few years, for exactly that reason - revenge.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

About the only time they might ring me up is if I forgot my credit card payment one month, so I hope not to earn much!

Which company do you use BexTech?

I have an 0871 number that goes straight to a foreign mobile with free incoming roaming in many countries. Next week when it gets home I'll experiment with diverting a UK mobile to the 0871 number; it has to undercut 30p per minute

So instead of you ringing from UK to a foreign mobile and paying highly inflated prices, you simply ring the 0871 instead? Do you have to pay anything extra for diverting the 0871 to a mobile as opposed to a UK landline?

There are 2 possibilities: give people the 0871 number, or divert your UK mobile to 0871. 0871 tariffs seem to be highly variable from mobiles. 10p 35p or more. I've been told that it is 12p on one of my tariffs, but I think OVP Virgin will be interesting. It's also possible that diversion to an 0871 number will not be allowed.

Apologies. In rushing off to lunch I omitted to clarify that the 0871 diversion to either a UK or Liechtenstein mobile is at no extra cost to caller or receiver.
