I think the reference was related to 'Gavin & Stacey,' but as I've never seen it, except in passing I could be wrong. :)

Ah, of course! I've only watched one or two episodes, hence why it didn't click.

I would stay away from Roath, Splott and Cathays, these are student heavy areas and you always hear about drunks smashing windows etc.

I wouldn't say Splott was very studenty. I lived there for 5 years and had very little trouble. I once left my car unlocked for 2 weeks when we went away. It was still there completely untouched when we got back!

I lived in Cathays for 2 years and Roath for a year. Very studenty, but no smashed windows and very few drunk students. People hear a lot of rubbish about students.

OP I always liked the look of the houses up by the Maenllwyd Inn.

Who? Anyway, I suspect going by the name, that Gavin is male, I'm female. :).

Hee hee, yes, Gavin and Stacey. Only watched a few episodes???!!! You must watch them; comedy gold!
  • The valleys aren't as bad as people make out. If you're looking for somewhere close to Cardiff but in quiet isolation try Merthyr, or Ponty or one of the other villages near the A470.

Its warm and welcoming but much like everywhere else - we do have our minority that spoil it.

Best of luck with the job and your move if you make it :) x

If I were going to drive to work in St Mellons and I wanted quiet, rural living I'd firstly consider Rudry, Lower Machen, Pentrepoeth and Bassaleg, all of which are quite close by and are sought-after rural or semi-rural locations. Close enough to Cardiff for shopping and entertainment.

Further afield I'd look at Monmouthshire, especially the area bounded by Penhow, Chepstow, Monmouth and Abergavenny. Usk is particularly nice. This is a beautiful area which remains unspoilt but with good access to all facilities (including three branches of Waitrose). The country pubs and restaurants in this area are renowned including one with a Michelin star

In the traditional Gwent valleys places such as Risca, Newbridge, Blackwood and Ebbw Vale are cheap but are not a patch on the above.

In the end you get what you pay for
