Structural engineer quote charge

I would not pay the amount he is requesting though. I paid £400ish for two site visits and a detailed report and calculations for an RSJ and unsupported chimney in London. I cannot see how the amount of his charge is reasonable. Whether you pay at all is more tricky. If you were very clear in discussing a free quote then I would not expect to pay but if not I would not assume people will always come out for free as people work differently.0

The site visit and measurement is surely 90% of the work in this instance? Once he's done that he will just have to input the data into his spreadsheet. No free lunch, and no free laptop
