IF bank plus one other?

Hi, sorry if this has been answered before but I have trawled and not found it yet, so here goes..
I've had a current ac with HSBC for several years but after recent financial problems I opened another ac with IF. Obviously I hadn't thought it through properly as I can't pay cash/cheques in 'over the counter' with IF. I'm reluctant to put money into HSBC and transfer it as I'm overdrawn with them and don't want them to take anything I pay in.
Obviously I need a physical bank a/c so I can move money and am considering Halifax as they're affiliated to IF, local to me, and have, on the phone, said they're happy with my opening an a/c even though I will only have a state pension to pay in.
I appreciate that beggars can't be choosers and Halifax current account interest rate is low, but if anyone can suggest a better account I'd be very grateful. At my age and financial stage I need every penny I can get!
Many thanks
