Do I have to pay to cancel???

Help! several years ago I took out a home insurance policy with Budget. This year I changed it to another company.
I cancelled over the phone (why didn't I write???), some weeks later I received a phone call from a very arsey young bloke demanding payment, I explained I cancelled it and had different insurance etc. He reckoned there was no note of that in my 'file'. He said I owed £90 for cover up to that point. I said no I'd cancelled, he then demanded proof of my new policy - which I thought was a bit much to be honest, whilst I realise its important to have it I imagine lots of folks now can't afford it. I sent a copy of the new policy. A couple of weeks later a young lady phoned and said they'd not received it. I said it had been sent and she said she would check and phone me back at the end of the week. I didn't hear anything so I assumed that it was all sorted. Now I've been contacted by Shakespears Solicitors wanting £90 - which she says is a cancellation fee.
Basically I in no way want to pay it! If I'd been told at the time I would in the future have to pay to cancel my policy I wouldn't have taken it out. I've changed policies previously and never had to pay a fee to do so.
So please how can I get them to leave me alone?
I feel this is really unfair.

Old Faithful we roam the range together,
Old Faithful in any kind of weather,
When the round up days are over,
And the Boulevard’s white with clover,
For you old faithful pal of mine.
Giddy up old fella cos the moon is yellow tonight,
Giddy up old fella cos the moon is mellow and bright,
There’s a coyote crying at the moon above,
Carry me back to the one I love,
And you old faithful pal of mine.

You could look to get a refund from your new company for being dual insured.
If you go down this route each company will need to give you roughly 50% back each for the time you have had 2 lots of cover.
You may need to pay a canc fee but might reduce the amount owedFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
First of all, are we talking about a cancellation (ie stopping it in the middle of the contract) or are we talking about allowing it to lapse (ie you had a renewal notice and you advised you didnt want to renew)?
Put in a complaint about the "cancellation" having not being done with the time, date and number you called from. With these details they should be able to trace the call recording. If it is a lapse, then there should be no fee and stick to your guns and take the matter to the FOS if needs be. If it is a cancellation (ie mid term) then there probably will be a fee but the company should have told you about it at the time and on demand need to give a breakdown and shouldnt have any time on cover beyond the cancellation date0 -
I (very stupidly) took out a car policy with them last night, but in the cold light of day decided to Google Donedeal...and lo, on this site there are many, many tales of woe. So I rang to cancel the policy (which would not come into effect until 1 May in any case) and they have insisted on charging me an admin fee of £30...DESPITE there being NO documents warning me that this would be the case!! What happened to the 'cooling-off period?? Can they do this?0

So its not a cancellation but you called them to advise that you didnt want to renew/ you wanted the policy to lapse.
Its fairly important to use the right terms as cancellations attracts fees but advising them not to renew doesnt.0 -
No.....I took out a new policy with them...and then changed my mind......about 12 hours later!! (Sorry..I think there are two conversations going on here!!!)0

It will restore your honour, make you feel proud, protect your house, give you a job, clean up the neighbourhood, remind you of how great you once were, clear out the venal and the corrupt, remove anything you feel is unlike you... Yes - because you hijacked someone else's threadAll matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.0 -
So sorry. Silly me, thinking that a thread entitled 'do I have to pay to cancel' might apply to me.....since that was the question I was asking!0
