    Getting back on topic:

    I have found 5:2 diet absolutely sustainable and it is free. Skip the next bit if you are aware of it.

    (You eat normally (not over eating but whatever foods you want) for 5 days but restrict your calorie intake to 500 for a woman and 600 for a man for 2 days.)

    I have lost 3 stone on this diet and maintained it for 2 years.

    What I like is the total flexibility of it. The fact that if you eat or drink something 'bad' in your 5 days it really does not matter. You can go 4:3 - you can not eat anything if you want for your 2 days. You can eat 3 small meals a day on your 2 days or just one.

    Yes, there is a cookbook associated with it - but the recipes are tasty and practical and I actually use them for everyday eating.

    I have changed my eating habits - but I have not given up alcohol - that was a not an option.

    I walk more and I use Fitbug to help me. This measures my paces so I know when I have done 10K and I have worked up to doing this - yes, 5:2. I tend not to do 10k at weekend but more like 3k :(

    I am 5.5 in height and 10 stone in weight now (give or take a couple of pounds either way). Until that iconic Panorama programme in Aug 2012 I did not 'do' diets. But I lost some weight do to death of OH and felt better for it. So the fact that little calorie counting and flexibility really appealed.

    I eat more healthily and I eat less as I feel full sooner. When I retire I will eat main meal lunch time - I do this at weekend and on holiday and tend to eat only one meal a day.

    Good luck with losing weight - it does take persistence, and it does mean cognitive training (right word? - where you train your 'expectations' i.e. if you always have an afternoon sweet snack you 'train' yourself not to by substitution or changing routine).

    Then in order to money save I suggest that you eat as much junk, cheap, processed food as possible. Firstly it is cheaper than more healthy food; secondly advice from various sources suggest that you will die earlier - and if you do, you obviously save more money (for your relatives).

    To those of you who are
    open to thinking outside the box, 5:2 could be viewed as cost neutral or even a method of saving money by eating less but better quality food.

    However by losing weight and keeping it off, then hopefully you will live longer and I suppose spend more.....

    Although eating junk food may be cheaper - I don't know, I haven't tried it - it may save money personally but there are huge costs around the national propensity to be fatter than a generation or two ago. Only yesterday I read of bigger grave-spaces needed to bury dead fatties. I've already heard of the need for bigger cremation furnaces, bariatric ambulances, all those kinds of things. Bigger hospital beds, reinforced chairs, toilet facilities, the list seems endless. None of this comes cost-free.

    Thank you MC, you have saved this 59 year old old money with your suggestion to buy the used book instead of a new one.......certainly a money saving post which belongs here.

    My steady weight gain as I've got older has been down to all-inclusive holidays. Always coming back 1/2 stone heavier & failing to shift it when back home.

    Went on 5:2 diet 18 months ago, lost 21-23lbs in 4 months & have kept it off. Gain at Xmas & on holidays but get straight back on 5:2 & weight drops off in a couple ofweeks. Love the diet, easy, & I feel loads better.

    Thank you for the money saving tip though.
    Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

    Another overweight 60+ here. I've been doing Weightwatchers on and off for years and have lost weight on it(then put it back on again). However I have just realised that a low carb diet work for me too and am on that at the moment, lost a pound since Tuesday. It is dangerous to have NO carbs, so just have healthy ones in moderation. I am fit an healthy however, just want to stay that way.

    (Relevance to Moneysaving in theis post - I can stop going to WW and save the fee if I do the low carb diet instead).

    Thank you for the above. The idea is not NO carbs, just LOW carbs. For instance, I've just had a slice of wholemeal toast with butter as part of my breakfast. Brekkie was what we call 'eggy onion' which is basically scrambled eggs combined with an onion, chopped and softened in olive oil.

    I loved the breakfasts that we had at our hotel in Alicante. I've never seen so wide a choice, and all those lovely cured hams, cheeses, sliced fruit, Spanish omelette, and the array of breads, to die for.

    Not sure what an 'all-inclusive' holiday is - we've never done that. If it implies everything being chosen for you then we shouldn't like it. We really do like making our own choice.

    Well, since getting that book last Monday I seem to have lost 2.4 pounds so will keep going until the next time we go away, which will be Saturday 24th May.

  • Interesting..I took early retirement 2 years ago and am now 57. Whilst working, I was cycling 22 miles a day just getting to work, weighed 12.5 stones, and was annoyed because I wasn't losing weight! Since leaving work it's dawned on me that the cycle-commute was keeping my weight in check - I'm now just over 14 stone, which at 6' tall is uncomfortable. I'm working part-time at a variety of jobs, none of which involve huge physical exercise. I'm finding it really difficult to get the weight off. I used to think nothing of getting on the bike and doing a 100 mile ride, but now I'm not riding daily, I find it really difficult to motivate myself. Have started running, but it seems far harder now to get the weight off than even 5 years ago.

    Not a lot to do with moneysaving, but an appropriate thread for the moneysaving community, and this particular stratum of it....

    Thank you, ericonabike. This has been DH's problem over the years. He used to be a very sporty guy and, like you, thought nothing of cycling 100 miles, staying in youth hostels (they're not exclusively for youth!) In his teens he'd been in a rowing club and did all those type of things. When he was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, 1981 I think it was, his lifestyle had completely changed. He was spending hours behind the driving-wheel and eating completely unsuitably. He took control of the diabetes and, because of that good control, he's survived this long. But he can't do much exercise because of the knee surgery and spinal surgery. He needs more carbs than I do, but that's no problem. If I have meat and green veg, he has meat, green veg, and a large potato.

    Not sure what an 'all-inclusive' holiday is - we've never done that. If it implies everything being chosen for you then we shouldn't like it. We really do like making our own choice.

    Pretty much means all meals and drinks are included in the holiday cost. For us this time (off on Thursday to Mexico) we'll be able to choose to eat in any of the 15 buffet & a-la-carte restaurants (plus 3 snack bars) spread across 3 'sister' resorts. Though TBH we'll also choose to 'eat out' locally if we feel like it or when we're out and about.

    To keep my post within the forum guidelines imposed by self appointed forum monitor zygurat789, one could save money by staying at home. :)
