Worked today on £5+ spend without a problem.

Has anyone worked out if it works when you include a free drink in the £5 total? Looks as though it might, as the drink & newspaper are taken off at the same point - would mean only making an actual £1.80 spend in real money.

Works on the hand scanner. Scan the card at the CS desk and then the paper. Paper and coffee and taken off on the SS.

This is exactly why Waitrose changed it to £10 spend before you got the free paper..... because if you were very MSE, you could spend less than £2, and get a free paper, free hot drink and free magazine etc..

To be honest I picked up the free paper - often just for the cross word etc, and my house is cluttered up with unread papers. I wasn't surprised when they increased the threshold to £10.
I certainly never complained to staff, or on-line. But I have witnessed customers getting VERY irate about it.
Just shows that some people are never grateful/satisfied.
You don't even have to spend a penny to get a free hot drink everyday, plus a free monthly magazine, plus a free weekly Waitrose mag/newsletter.
I don't know any other Supermarket chain who offers anywhere near this level of 'freebies' to customers.

For the record, I received an email yesterday from Waitrose which said:-

    "Dear Mrs.....Old Bag.

We wanted to get in touch to share some good news.spacer.gifspacer.gifAs you may be aware, we recently increased the minimum amount you needed to spend to save money with the myWaitrose newspaper offer.spacer.gifspacer.gifOver the past few weeks we've listened to feedback from our members, and as a result from Wednesday 28 May we're lowering the minimum spend to £5 from Monday to Friday. I'm puzzled by that. How does the coffee get added to the total? Presumably it involves using a coffee machine?

Thanks for sharing. It's made be feel really dumb for not realising this before. Fortunately, I tend to top-up my Saturday i with a visit to my local library, and/or read online.

You have to get the coffee from a self-serve machine then pay for it at the till (similar to paying for a loose bread roll). Or at a few stores you get a receipt from the till then collect a coffee at the bakery counter (as they don't have a till at the counter).

    It does indeed work.

Certain other things work as well. (Believe me, I've tested them.:))

Multibuys, such as buy two £1.50 products for £2, counts as £3 towards your 'spend' rather than £2. And BOGOFs count double, if you see what I mean.

Every little helps, as the other lot put it.

They have a sign above the coffee machines with the appopriate bar codes on display. At least that's the way it works at my local.

Not that I've ever bothered with the hand scanners myself.

I always ask for it to be added to my bill through manned checkouts and pick up my capaccino on way out of shop.

Discounts on multibuys also work on other shopping -
I have at times bought reduced packs of say chicken pieces when they are on 3 for £10 and the till takes off the discount on the full price e.g. 3 packs @£4 pack on 3 for £10 offer: buy 3 reduced packs @£2.50 per pack, less discount £2 so pay £5.50 for the 3 packs.
