Cost of Gas installation

Hello, I'm in the process of having central heating fitted in my 2nd floor flat which only has electric storage heaters. The gas pipe runs up the outside of my building to within 12 inches of the wall below my kitchen window. It serves the two flats below me which already have gas installed.
It seems a complicated process to have everything installed, I've had to go to SGN to have the gas put in, I've then got to get an energy company to install a meter before getting the central heating and boiler fitted.
My main gripe is the cost that SGN (who seem to have a monopoly) want for installing gas, over £1100, to drill a hole through my kitchen wall. To me this seems exorbitant, does this sound correct, is there any way I can get this done more cheaply?
Thanks in advance.

I'll come and drill a hole in your wall for £1050 if that helps
But I'm no gas supplier. If you want the gas supply, you have to pay a gas supplier for that, but if it's just a hole you want, I can definitely save you a couple of ponies
If, as you say, SGN have a monopoly on the supply installation business where you live, then I'm afraid by definition you can't go elsewhere.0 -
I thought I would eventually have to bite the bullet but was hoping there might be an alternative, never mind, thanks anyway.0

Is the pipe outside steel? If so,does its uppermost section have a tee piece with a plugged outlet?
Bung me £500 notes and I'll sort it for you.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
Pretty sure it is steel, and it looks like a tee piece at the top, would like to get it done legally though! :-)0
