Car insurance due for renewal

My car insurance expires in 3 weeks and my current provider won't renew my policy due to 2 claims. I have a joint policy with my partner, he only has a provisional. The first accident he wrote my car off and the second I reversed into a car parking and knocked their bumper. Even though he wrote the car off it goes off my NCB not his.
When i get a quote for myself it comes in over £100 a month but when I get a quote under his name with my as an additional but main driver its £30 a month cheaper.
A friend has just told me that it may not be legal to put it under his name when he very rarely drives the car now, just to save me money. Im hoping someone can advise as do not want to invalidate my policy.

Its a bit more complicated..... in principle, perfectly legal to put it in his name as long as all claims are declared, driving histories, that its noted he doesnt own the vehicle etc
The two complexities....
NCD is personal to the policyholder, put the insurance in his name and he cannot use whats left of your NCD and Named Drivers cannot bring NCD to the policy. If you've been asking for quotes with 0 NCD then this is fine.
The main user of the car must also be declared. Most insurers default this to the policyholder and often dont give the option to change it on their websites and so before buying you'd have to switch to the phone and possibly lose online discounts (though most will honour them given its a limitation of their site thats driving you to the phone).
Finally, remember that a provisional driver is cheaper than a newly qualified driver and not all insurers that accept provisionals also accept newly qualified. If he is the PH and the insurer (not broker) that you are with dont accept him after he passes the policy has to be cancelled whereas if he was only a ND you'd have the option of just removing him instead. Naturally a policy cancelled mid term loses its partial NCD0
