Ford Fusion

Friend currently has an elderly Fiesta, on its last legs. Wants something newer with a bit more boot space up to about £4,000.

Fusions seem very good value, second hand. I understand they are based on Fiesta mechanicals, so parts are plentiful.

There are lots of low mileage ones around for around £3,000. Not bothered about style but wants decent economy.

Most of the official reviews comment on their old-fashioned looks and underwhelming interior, but this is not an issue.

Anybody have any views on them?

I'm currently selling one - not plugging but just wanted to share my experience.

Bought it in 2010 after searching for over a year for a second hand fusion in black or gunmetal that was right mileage, FSH, good condition etc. For me it was about space, seating position, practicality and cost. I have no idea why Ford stopped making them, they're essentially a Fiesta estate. Very useful in respect of space in boot, even more with rear seats lowered.

Mine, as many are, is ex-Mobility and even at ten years old she's only done 55,000 over half of that I've done myself.

IMHO the car is cheap to run, insure and repair (not that much has really happened, new clutch and cam belt oh and water pump at same time because apparently it's the same job so you may as well replace it just in case).

The boots tend to be a bit tatty from my searches, usually as a result of either wheelchairs or prams scraping the interior. The car is comfortable to drive, it handles well into corners. Mines a 1.4, doesn't do too badly at speed but obviously isn't a Ferrari.

It did handle well in winter weather, although with winter tyres on front it got everywhere.

After I had my fusion my MIL bought an automatic which she loves, and my dad bought one also as a second car.

So why am I selling it? Two reasons, I've upgraded to a Scenic because the opportunity arose to have my dad's old car when he upgraded. I could've had either his Scenic or Fusion. The biggest problem I had with the fusion was seating my 2 year old behind the drivers seat meant he regularly kicked me in the back. I probably have the seat at about half on its runners, so it became a bug bear. I knew upgrading to a newer Fusion would bring the same problems, especially being pregnant which was another reason I wanted a larger car.

I would however, totally recommend the Fusion to anyone with the need to occasionally transport backseat passengers, 5 in the car can be a squish, but for four it's a very comfortable and economic vehicle for distances.

    Here Endeth the Lesson!

    Xx
  • Youngest daughter has had one from new - September 2010. It's now at around 50,000 totally trouble free miles. Other than routine 12,000 mile/1year servicing it's needed two new tyres at around 30,000 miles and new front discs and pads at about the same mileage.
She's been very pleased with it's practicality and durability. Yes, the interior is now a bit dated but if you're not too bothered about the "image" it's a good car.
The only thing she is not happy with is the fuel economy. It has the 1.4 litre (Duratec?) engine and is mainly used in an urban environment (Liverpool).
I've probably given it the kiss of death now and it will go wrong big time!

Really helpful posts. Thank you. Reliable but a bit boring is OK. It fits the bill.

but only as I have the chance to up grade.

It has been in the family since new (a 54 reg) my late farther had it on mobility and bought it for me after the 3 year spell.

The mpg works out (for me) at 36 overall , of lots of local runs and one or two long runs a month.

It could carry a vast amount when in van mode (seats down) even enough for the wife's glamping ;-

Its now done over 100,000 with very few faults .......

My only pet hate is the noise, going slightly deaf I have problems hearing people depending on road surfaces ......... especially at 80 .... erm I mean 70 :-)

Will be sad to see it go, did offer it to my daughter .... but she wants some thing smaller

    We had one.

Decent car but don't forget it is essentially the Courier van rather than the Fiesta car. (Ford essentially put windows in the van like Citroen did with the Berlingo)

It handles as such (so i disagree witht he poster above saying it handles well it is dull and safe that's it) and that's also why the interior is so functional. Ours was an auto and wasn't great on petrol for the size/weight but had the 1.6 engine.

Certainly a functional thing but not inspiring. If you remember what it is you won't be too unimpressed.

Ours was displaying signs of the head gasket going but had rolled on to about 60,000 when it got chopped in for a Nissan Note.

Specifically I was referring to the ford suspension and cornering...

    So was I.

    It's a van. It handles like a van ;)

It does handle quite well actually............it certainly DOES NOT handle like a van......... Look at a Courier and a Fusion - patently not the same vehicle.

A typical Ford, good gearbox, good steering/handling, parts cheap and readily available. It is a Fiesta in another body shell.
I had a 1.6 petrol for 5 years, could easily get 50+ mpg on a long run if driven carefully - no more than 60 mph !!
Comfortable, roomy, quite flexible inside. Great if you are a bit "creaky" and need something with easier access.

As has been mentioned already - worst point is road noise through the tyres.
Replaced it with a Fiesta - much, much quieter !

Sorry the Transit Connect. The new Courier

But as for them not being the same - The lights etc are exactly the same

    ....

    A Fusion http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/ford/fusion/2011-ford-fusion-petrol-1-6-titanium-5dr/2250954?isexperiment=true

A Connect. Same thing, less windows http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/big-stuff/ford/transit-connect/ford-transit-connect-low-roof-van-trend-tdci-90ps/2173828?isexperiment=true

As the owner of a number od sports cars over the years I can very honestly report it handles dull but safe as i said.

It probably handles exceptionally well compared to many old cars but a thrilling drive it is not!

It is jacked up and top heavy so does not handle like the Fiesta car which is a sweet wee thing (driven the ST version of the same model year so I have a direct comparison)

Even the dash in more or less the same!

My parents say its the worst car they ever bought. They got fed up of the issues and poor build quality.

Bought almost new with very few miles. Sold months later at a great loss and bought a Golf which they still have.
