Why are people so rude when viewing your home. Have had viewers in and they criticised evrything. "don't like that wallpaper, the carpet is horrible don't like the suite," etc. etc. Downright bad manners.
The comments on my furniture are unnesary as they are not buying that, the comments on my taste are unnesary as wallpaper and carpet can be changed.
I blame all the house buying shows that are on tv. People think they can critisise and be rude about your home as much as they want.
You are NOT on a tv show. Show a little respect for what is after all a persons home. Is your home so perfect then.
If you don't like it fine, discuss it in private not in front of the homeowner.

I completely agree with you.
I haven't had an experience like yours but it is obvious some buyers are just plain thick. They are about to sign their lives away to a bank for 25-30 years yet can't visual what a lived in house would look like when emptied.
Problem with our country is that a bunch of nobodies genuinely walk around thinking they are celebrities. It wouldn't surprise me if in their heads they thought a camera was following them around.
I mean no disrespect to some people on here but the 'evaluate my house listing' type threads come up with some BS comments. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

At a cost... A cost that needs to be considered when assessing the value of a house. Something that prospective buyers might be doing when viewing your house.
This is why most EAs tell the owners to be somewhere else when the viewings are going on.0 -
Got to admit I'd show them the door if they were being rude like that, wouldn't care one not about them putting an offer in or seeing the rest of the property. But then I am a militant seller be it cars, houses or ebay tut.

Some people want to be THE man when they haven't yet become A man.0

These buyers will probably also ask you to accept a lower offer just before the exchange.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0

Well I watch a lot of property shows but would never occur to me to be rude to the home owner about the decor or whatever. We have done a number of viewings with both estate agents and owners over the last two months and yes I think as a potential buyer you should act differently depending on who does the viewing.
Might be some people feel they can get a vendor to accept a lower offer if they openly express dislike for certain things in the house - personally I'd rather the vendor have a positive impression of me as a buyer, I mean I wouldn't be keen to sell to someone who acts like an !!!! at the viewing...0 -
Weird that someone would comment in front of the vendor. Clearly socially inept!0

Method in their tactics, ignore them.
If they don't like whatever they know to sling their hook....well in your mind you are thinking that without saying it, smile and say nothing.........they could be problem buyers for you, well rid of them, after all you decide who you sell your home to.
PAST BEHAVIOUR PREDICTS FUTURE BEHAVIOUR........BEWARE!!
friends had similar experience, note through door asking if they would be willing to sell to them, just so happened they were preparing to put their property up for sale, anyways the enquirers were welcomed in and made nasty comments, the owners instantly disliked their attitude, they left and owners found out they had put in an offer of 10% below asking price, no way no matter what they pay will they get their home, they want nice people to hand their 30 year owned and cherished home and to have nice people buy for the nice neighbours.

During last nights episode of Under Offer on BBC2, at one point the agent said that that viewers criticizing a house was simply part of the negotiation process, and usually indicated they would make an offer. Then added "I know everything that's wrong with it, just name a figure".
I would certainly agree though that it's unnecessary to be rude if the owner is actually present.
Exactly. The last thing you should do when viewing a property is show that you've 'fallen in love' with it. It's just basic haggling tactics to point out everything wrong with the product you're buying, then use that as a means to try to negotiate the price down.0 -
I hated doing viewings with the owners present because it made me feel like I couldn't honestly discuss what I thought of the place with my partner during the viewing - and if you don't talk about it as the time as you walk through it's easy to forget what you liked/didn't like. We often viewed several properties on the same day and it's easy to get them mixed up!
If you don't like hearing what people think of your property then you may be better off having the agent do the viewings and making yourself scarce. That certainly made me feel a lot more comfortable as a prospective buyer.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0
