the seals will have shrunk/dried out hence the gas leaking out in a very short time
you have to keep air con turned on all year round to stop seals drying out

Used to do this when the aircon worked :D but something leaked regardless :(

did you buy it new...if not previous owner hasn't ran it all year and seals dried out..if you had it from new then it had another fault

All car aircon system will leak a small amount due to the compressor design. It's impossible to completely seal them.

Sure, understand that, but the air con in our other car (2003 Corolla Verso) is still going strong without ever needing to be worked on, so something seems to have sprung more of a leak with the Yaris

Owned since new. With hindsight I should have taken it back to be worked on within the first year as there were occasional whiffs of air con gas from quite early on that were presumably early signs of a problem, but it took 18 - 24 months for it to completely grind to a halt and by then it was too late to get warranty work done. Oh well. The seals probably have gone dry since then though, as it was a couple of years before I tried having it regassed, which would explain why it leaked out so quickly last year.

edit: decided not to get it fixed when it first failed as I didn't have much spare cash and was only using the car for a couple of miles each way to work anyway so air con made almost no difference, these days it's a bit further and a cool car would be nice in the summer heat :)
