Asking For Proof Of Postage At PO Dilemma

Just a quick question. I took 4 items to post today. I paid for postage for 2 items at the PO. I had already put stamps on the other 2 items and asked for proof of postage. The PO member of staff threw a massive paddy and told me to go online and download the form in future so he could stamp it and how rude it was of me to take up his time. He raised his voice quite loudly and I did feel quite uncomfortable.

Was what I did wrong? I would understand if I asked for proof of postage for say 20 items, but it was only 2 and it was done in less than a minute. Is giving out proof of postage when asked part of their job description or was I asking far too much?

Please could a kind soul clarify. Thanks for reading and for anyone who might be able to help.

The Post Office is a different company to Royal Mail. One of the problems of RM privatisation is that at some point Post Offices will be able to charge extra for doing work for Royal Mail. Obviously no need to take it out on the customer but the chances are after taking time to print out a proof of postage and not getting anything for the sale the PO will have lost money.

I use the bulk forms - saves me and the assistant time at the counter.

That said, it doesn't take much time to do two POP even if you haven't bought the postage for them there. Luckily for me, both the post offices I use are very accomodating, but I have been using them regularly for three years so have built up a good relationship with the staff and they recognise I spend a lot with them - are there other POs nearby you could use?

This is my local one where I normally spend a fortune when I send things to America.

Thanks to all for your feedback. Much appreciated.

If feel strongly about it, ring and complain.

I also got a telling off the other day, mine was 5 parcels. They used to just give pop automatically, so when I asked for it she threw a strop and said I should have asked at the beginning of the transaction as the rules have changed!
Can someone tell me how to do/ were to get the bulk forms? Ive never heard of them?

  • My Post Office is the opposite - if I ever take anything in (e.g. a Lovefilm rental return) and DON'T ask for a POP they always offer, as apparently they get paid for each one they produce! Possibly the difference between an owner/operator and an employee?

    PPI Party Pooper
My POP is just a receipt, the lady at the counter hands it to me and I write down the name of the addressee.
At other P.O.'s they don't know me and tend to write the postcode on themselves.
I have never had a problem claiming with just the receipt?

But as the OP is not buying the postage at the PO there is no receipt. I can understand why POs are not happy when customers come in with parcels buying postage elsewhere - doesn't excuse rudeness of course.

If you have to go to the PO to get POPs it seems easiest to buy the postage there too if the price is the same.
