I would agree with most of your post, however ...

The problem with your steering wheel being set at 45°, is caused by mechanics without the knowledge to handle a wheel assembly with an airbag fitted. if you find the right place, ask if they can resmove and reset a steering wheel that is fitted with an airbag.

Why would the wheel need reset, its position within the splines is fixed, indeed the provision of a "master" spline would make it quite impossible to deviate from this point regardless.

Op, have a mechanic set the geometry rather than a tyre fitter.

Kwik Fit worked wonders on mine - do you have one?

  • Whoah, is this a first? Someone praising kwik-fit. I must have woken up in some parallel universe.

Always been fine for me, and cheap!

I'm an idiot with cars though. Technically minded when it comes to IT/smartphones/etc. but rubbish with cars!

Ah, reminds me of the timeless quote from my mates dad:

"The only garage I trust is Kwik Fit - and that's because they were the ones who spotted the leaking shock absorbers, corroded brake discs and poor tracking on my 4 year old Volvo that even the main dealer had missed a week earlier at the annual service"

Same way people that dont use antivirus products claim they have never had a virus or anything dodgy happen to their PC.

Except they probably have but wont know because they dont know howto check and dont have software to check for them.

Using a computerised wheel alignment machine everyday in my job working in a car accident repair shop this is the procedure in easy to understand terms
    1. Fit the pods to the wheels and enter the make model year etc
    2. Check for wheel run out and level heads (check for play in track rod ends bushes etc)
    3. Fit brake lock and turn steering wheel to a measured postion both right and left then centralised steering wheel and fit steering wheel lock to straight ahead postion
    4. adjust tracking if necessary

Most cars there is no camber adjustment or caster adjustment Renaults vauxhalls there is a little adjustment in the camber as there is on cars where the strut is bolted to the hub carrier by two bolts and not a single pinch bolt like on fords vw etc
Obviously tyre pressures should be checked prior to starting as well and even correct size wheels and tyres I've seen one transit with two different size wheels on the front and they wondered why it drove like a go kart !! I would also say on vws the subframe will move back slightly if the car is hit hard on the wheel and this will throw the caster out
