Hi, I've just checked my credit file for the first time in a while and something has appeared on there from a debt collector saying I owe £240 and it has defaulted. The address connected to this is from over 4 years ago but this was not on my credit file when I last looked, in November last year. I have no idea what it's from. What would people advise I do? And if I paid this off, would the default be removed from my credit file?

No, it wouldn't get removed, just marked as settled then fall off 6 years from default date.
DCAs frequently change a default date to more recent to get your attention. Which DCA is it?
Could it be an older account of yours?
What type of account is it reported as?:beer:0
