Currys\PC World

Hi,

I had to send my laptop back to the "so called" Know How guys at PC World because one of the USB sockets was broken. The USB socket was replaced under the warranty which is all fine.

However when I bought the laptop it came with 8GB of RAM and I upgraded it to 12GB. The laptop also came with Windows 8 but I bought Windows 8.1 Pro.

Now when I got the laptop back today the 12GB was removed and replaced with 8GB and Windows 8.1 Pro was removed and Windows 8 put in it's place.

In the service terms it states that "Should a service ALL require your product to be reformatted to factory settings or hardware replaced we will contact your first, however was are not responsible for any loss of data". Fair enough. But I was not contacted to say this would be happening at all.

I know that replacing a USB socket does not require the RAM to be replaced and the hard drive to be re-formatted. No my Windows 8.1 Pro licence is not valid.

I tried to contact Curry's\PC World and they told me they couldn't help.

Can someone help because they've taken 12GB of RAM of me and my windows licence?

Thanks

You windows license should still be valid. Besides the upgrade from 8 to 8.1 is F.O.C and can be done via the store (albeit not a pro version). To regain you pro version just download an 8.1 .iso. This is perfectly legal to do so, even via methods that cannot be named on this forum. Any iso will do as they're all the same for new windows versions. Then just burn this to a disc or a bootable USB stick and use your pro key again.

As for the RAM; Its a difficult one to prove. There is usually a report filled out noting any damage etc. Have you checked to see what this states in regards to installed memory if anything?

Only other thing you could do to argue your case would be a receipt/invoice for the RAM you purchased and proof it is the correct type for that model of laptop.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

They probably thought that it was a possible software fault so wiped the machine first, then when it wasn't - replaced the motherboard.
