Fence - new and old, how to treat?

My (small-ish) garden has fences on three sides, one side of which belongs to the nieghbours. The neighbours have recently had to replace their fence due to storm damage.

The new fence is untreated (except for a clear basic treatment I believe). It is also a different type of fence to the existing ones (individual panes of wood instead of panels). Existing fence and shed are painted a horrible brown colour which I hate. I want to paint/spray the fencing on all sides to look the same.

Being new to gardens and fences and all, do I have to sand down the existing panels first? (Sounds like a nightmare.) Or can I paint straight on top? Also, which range of fence treatment/stain do people recommend?

Unless the neighbours give you permission, you can't paint/treat their fence.

Should have mentioned that I am on excellent terms with my neighbours. They have no problem with me treating the fence.

(Technically, the fence is on my land by about 20cm or so, though that doesn't bother me the slightest.)

You don't have to sand the fence down before treating.

I personally wouldn't use a sprayer unless you're prepared to cover everything in your and your neighbours' garden. There have been threads on here before about garden furniture, neighbour's cars, children's toys, etc, being damaged by spray drift.
