Bathroom Fitters Recommendations (Cambridge Area)

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes...
We've been looking for a reliable bathroom fitter for a few months now, but we can't seem to find anyone.
So far, out of the many (!) plumbers/fitters we've tried to contact by phone/email about the job, none of the few who actually bothered reply and come over to have a look at what needed to be done have contacted us again, let alone given us a quote, even when we tried to follow up.
At this point, we're pretty desperate and we're starting to understand why people go for cowboys or the overpriced guaranteed installations offered by shops.
We have a detailed breakdown of all the materials to buy (plan & quote from Ridgeons), we're fine with letting them buy the materials themselves if they prefer, and we're very flexible on schedule (as long as they're reliable).
Can anyone recommend a good, reliable builder/fitter in the Cambridge area? We tried Rated People and got no interest there either.
Any help would be appreciated.

I share your pain. Why individuals call themselves plumbers (or any builder come to that) is beyond me, if they haven't got the decency to turn up or give a quote. If they haven't got time simply say so when you call them.
I had about 10 calls for my house. 3 turned up and 2 gave quotes. In the end I decided to use one of them just to exchange the bathroom suite and tackled the rest myself by contacting a plasterer (very reliable and has done lots of other work) and a spark (did the job after a number of calls and a tiler, again who was very reliable.
In all in cost £1600 against a figure of 5k given by a sales person.
Incidentally I found mine on gumtree. Try them with something small first and see how they go.Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0 -
It would indeed be great if people had the decency to let you know if they're too busy or just not interested.
Thanks for the gumtree suggestion, we might give that a go.
If we had the time, we could probably do some of it ourselves too, but we thought it would be nice to have things done properly for once, and not have the place looking like a building site for weeks if not months.

Hello Aelynn
Welcome to the MSE Forum.
Word of mouth and personal recommendations can work well. Down our street, we talk to our neighbours and get recommendations that way.
We've had the following work done by very reliable traders, all were recommendations from our neighbours who've used them:
Roof - ridge tiles
Roof - new fascias and soffits
Central Heating - an excellent local gas engineer does our annual maintenance
Garage - new door fitted
Garden - new (concrete posts & base) fence
Our next door neighbour loves gardening but he is elderly and less able to cope with it. He's handed it over to a gardening company. We'll find out from him if they're doing a good job. If it isn't too expensive, we might get them to mow our grass.
If you don't know your neighbours well, this would be a good way to chat to them and get to know them. Tell them that you're looking for a reliable plumber and ask them if they can recommend anyone.
Unfortunately, I can't help you with personal recommendations because I'm in East Yorkshire.:D
Good luck.
