Breaks at work

I'm only deputy and I can't start close down earlier than 5.30 when the store closes. The store manager never works past 4.30-5 so she has no idea how hard work close down is.
I'm on a really good salary so can't complain but to be honest I don't see the job working long term with my pregnancy and so I'm thinking of leaving anyway. Sad but I've got to put my baby and my health first.
If overall the pay is good it is about managing out the hours issue
shame to give up the money.
Is your manager trying to mange you out?
who does the days you don't work
Team brief.. where do you get the info for this can someone else do it(training) or be prepared the day before.
Is the place so busy at 9am all the tills need to be up and running.
If the store manger is gone by 5 then start to shutdown if quiet there must be jobs people can be doing, if busy then that business.
I am beginning to think this is not some cowboy outfit and you need to work the system to get what you need....0 -
It sounds like a fairly big place if it has 2 floors and 10 cash desks.
It's not unreasonable that if a manager has a start time before the opening of business that they leave before close but I'd expect that, in that situation, you should have another manager that starts later and works beyond closing time.
That was how it worked in my old store that had 2 floors.0 -

not up on the pg benefits dates but I can see this being an issue for them.0 -
Putting the PG issue to one side
why the break so early?
What's the busy/staff profile that requires these hours/breaks.0 -
When you read the government's official line on this one, it's a little too vague.
20 uninterrupted minutes for a 6 hour+ day. It doesn't specifically say that the break has to eliminate any instances of working for 6 hours, which is the case for you.
I would imagine, reasonably, that the intention of the break is to eliminate such an instance though.
I remember when the law used to be 15 minutes per 4 hours of work.
The law is certainly biased towards the employer and not the employee.
No wonder the government needs to use the dodgiest possible interpretations of data to present employment positively.0 -
It is a big company, I'm not looking to change my working day I just think my break is unreasonable which I'm going to put in writing. Pg I can't change what happened, I won't qualify for any mat pay but I do think my line manager is annoyed by it.
I'll just put my request in and see how it goes, although as I said for health reasons it might not be the best idea to keep working there.
Thanks for the advice.0 -

When was the law 15mins for per 4 hours?0 -

I don't know of any law but when I worked in the NHS (a dogs age ago) it was standard practice = 4 hours/15 mins.
Not that we ever got the chance unless you had a kick ask Ward Sister and full staffing. (to be fair to my Ward Sister she did try her very best to make sure we got breaks)
When i moved on to A and E and ICU that went out the window! Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...0 -

You cannot extrapolate the way one employer does something to be the law.0
