Is it worth getting tv extended warranty??

I am hoping to buy a LG42PX5D plasma this week. The cheapest i can find it is £628 (will use quidco). Anyway, it only has a 1 year warranty, is it worth getting the extended one??? Or if anything happened would i be as well to claim my house insurance??

Honestly, probably not ! you could insure the kettle the toaster the washing machine the T.V. and the dog, BUT........

If you put that lolly aside and used that for repairs BET you would save £££s

The thing is once your year warranty is expiring you get a letter through the door asking if you want to take out more warranty. If you take it out now you lose your 'free' year. In saying that its always happened when we bought large items???????????

My partner took out a 5 year warranty on his tv with debenhams (when they were selling tv`s ! which covered accidental damage etc..

4.7 years later.. when moving house.. it got damaged.

Put in a claim, an insurance guy came round to take the tv away and for him to sign some forms... then two weeks later a cheque for £1000 arrived on the mat!!

So can definately be worth taking out extra insurance !

  • My household insurance would have covered accidental damage. It is a standard policy obtained by ringing round and going with the cheapest! May I suggest changing your policy if that kinda thing isnt covered! I think doubling up on insurance is a common mistake. For example mobile phones are often sold with a policy yet again my houshold insurance covers it! And no, you cant claim twice - profiting from insurance is fraud!

I think insurance is personal to different people, no one can tell you how much you value risk. You need to ask yourself whether you are prepared to take the risk yourself, how likely is it something will happen, how upset would you be if something did happen. Weigh it all up and then make your choice. And then dont feel bad if you make the wrong choice - contrary to our natural instincts it is not rational to regret such choices.

I'm sure I heard somewhere that John Lewis give a 5 year guarentee as standard on TVs so if you can get the same model there it might be worth going for that. I belive they also price match too.

See if Richer Sounds (www.richersounds.com) stock the model you want. If they do, and if the alternative supplier you've found has it available and in stock, Richer Sounds will do a price-match on it. Richer Sounds also do much cheaper long-term warranties than anybody else, in my experience.

(I've no connection to RS but I did buy a telly from them a few months ago - pricematched to another supplier and with a 5yr warranty costing 10% of the purchase price after the price match discount).
