Police stats show increase in road casualties on unlit streetO

This is one of the things that gets to me the most. More and more roads are now unlit. The A500 now has large portions that are unlit after a certain time, usually just after midnight, a perfectly reasonable time to be driving for many people. Yet it's now illegal to fit HID's (even if they're correctly calibrated and adjusted for your vehicle's headlights). I have the brightest H4 bulbs you can legally buy (uprated wattage is also illegal, 55w is the legal limit) yet when I'm driving down a dark road, I feel like I've got two candles stuck on the end of my car, even on beam. It actually makes for very unpleasant driving.
A friend of mine with the same car has a set of 35w HID's fitted, adjusted correctly, shielded correctly with a beam pattern to MOT standards and the difference is incredible.
Have you been checked for cataracts?0 -
Specialboy: Rubbish, the street lights have been turned off on a local bypass and not one extra crash has been reported, you do realise that cars are fitted with headlights don't you?
So that means the statistics are wrong does it?
I have a copy of the relevant issue of the Times in front of me. The article is by their Transport Correspondent Phillip Pank supported by The Times data team. This is a team of investigative journalists specialising in statistical and similar research, led by a qualified statistician Steffano Ceccon with members Nichola Hughes and Megan Lucero.
But of course specialboy's experience of his local by pass lights and accompanying snide comments is much more relevant that any analysis of official police statistics by qualified statisticans..... There do seem to be increasing numbers of people here who are only hanging out to make snarky pointless comments.0 -
Even before they started switching them off there were probably more miles of major road unlit than lit.
There are/were definitely more non-trunk/major roads unlit.
Come out of your cosy brightly light urban areas and you find that street lighting is virtually non-existent. Us in the country learnt to use the headlight switchThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Does the data state anything about the causes of the crash?, how the crashes happened? what happened in the build up to the crashes?
The crashes could be caused by any number of reasons and not just lack of light, tired, on the phone, blinded by other motorist, road rage, ditch finder rubber not paying attention, heart attack, wasp, speeding, badly maintained car, or the plain and simple someone ran out of talent.
Personally I would rather few roads were lit, but instead put Cats eyes everywhere instead.0 -

I live in area where the streets lights are turned off after 1AM.
theres a particular bend in the road on our stretch that even when lit catches a 1 out who don't know the road and end up going through the bushes down the banking and into the hybrid pitch for the school, now its unlit theres a few incidents a year on that stretch as apposed to the odd 1 a year or so.
So yeh I can see it sometimes doesn't help with unlit area but you don't how the crashes occurred, was it because they were inexperienced on a mobile got shocked by an animal in the road, road contamination on that basis the stats are flawed, unless the report categorically says they know how every crash occurred, and was determined by accident investigators at the scene that the poor unlit road was the blame I don't think youll get me convinced that increase in crashes in my local area is a result of the street lamps being off.0
