Temporary Hot Water

Fiances has just about allowed us to find a really old house that needs a complete overhaul. Within the context of this I need to see if there is a way to have temporary water heating?. The current heating system cant be overhauled without a complete replacement which finances wont allow right now. We can get by with temporary cooking and heating (as its also summer nearly) but hot water for body washing is a must. Was wondering if you can rent or buy a 'sort of' all in electric shower cubicle etc that heats water from electric supply?. Were miles away from public baths so that wont work etc.

You mean a shower cubicle with an electric shower?
You can buy a triton shower for about £50, it heats the water itself.

Your problem is likely to be wiring in such a house - you can't simply stick a 10kW shower on old wiring even if there is a potential connection near the bathroom. Neither will it run from a 3 pin plug socket as that would be pretty dangerous. However its perfectly possible assuming you have a bath to get someone to put in an over the bath instant heat shower - the shower itself will be somewhere from £50 upwards, a rail and shower curtain another £20 but the wiring and plumbing costs maybe higher, and if your fuse box is outdated that might scupper the chances of putting in a new circuit to run the shower from.

Was thinking more along lines of one of those sealed cubicles. Aware electrics need to be sound of course. Thoughts?.

If you can live with a strip-wash you can get little instant above-sink hot water heaters which at 3kW as easier to get a suitable electric supply. Or even small wall-mounted tank type water heaters.

If it's a real priority could you do the bathroom first, as a priority and fit a hot-water cylinder with an immersion heater, an E7 one with a bottom mounted heater would get you a full cylinder of hot water. Get the cold water feed and electric in, that would get your washing facilities up and running and you could plumb in the hot water heating coil at a later date when you do the boiler and the heating system?
  • - a [tanked] standard immersion type element is going to be 3kW
    - most tankless are also a minimum of 3kw
    - most instantaneous are 9kW+

£50 quid will buy an on demand 7 gallon flow heater, but you will need a stat controlled mixer or showerhead that will service the usual basic washing up & hygiene needs.

    Best of luck
