    Just tell him it died - he's 12 and old enough to realise that pets will eventually die (if they're not killed in the meantime ;)).

    There might be a few tears, but he'll get over it.

    or just don't mention it. my mum gave my rabbit away and i didn't relise for weeks.

    Thanks for your comments everyone. I think I got off very lightly! DS was so keen to see the last episode of Dr Who ( I had recorded it), I decided the best time to tell was just before he watched it. He said "Aaww! thats a shame, he was four & a half years old" So much for him being very upset! Dr Who comes to the resue again.
    I still miss the fish, he always caught my attention when passing his bowl (sorry , I mean tank albeit plastic, with gravel a castle & archway)
    planing for the future, living for today ;)
