* My oldest dd is starting secondary in September! I feel so upset! *

But I'm not quite sure why :(

Any other mothers/fathers on here have their children starting year 7 this year?

I've just got back from the parents evening and it's all real now!! I'm just so scared!! Doesn't seem that long ago that I was in secondary school!! She has an induction day tomorrow, I'm hoping I don't cry like a complete idiot and embarrass her

I don't know, that school is just so massive, with so many pupils, a lot older than her, ugh!

  • Hi ya

:j Im sure we can all remember the first day at secondary school,:D but it will be daunting enough for your DD with out her worrying about you, hook up with a mate and go for a coffe, or girlie shopping  Get up xtra early nice breakie pack lunch etc..She may hook up with someone in which case they will probably hit the canteen and youll find you sarnies in the bottom of her bag  and if you can take her along, and if you can agree to pick her up after, have those great listening ears on and find out all about her wonderful, fantasic ,life changing day You will both be fine:T !! tell youwhat let us know tomorrow how she and yourself both got on on this brand new day for both of you:grouphug:

Don't worry if you think that's bad in a few short years you'll be going to the school to discuss her GCSE options!

Please dont worry - my ds is nearly at the end of year 7 & has got on well & loves the variety.

I felt exactly the same as you & couldnt settle at all on his first day!! He was very excited to go & felt very bored at the end of year 6, I think its a natural progression.

My worst fear was the school bus (there was no other way to get there)-but he loves getting the bus, meeting mates etc. In fact our circumstances have changed & I now have a car, I said I would take him to school but he declined!!!

Its natural to worry - bet you felt the same on her first full day at infant school!!

    Good luck!;)
    NEVER ASSUME!
  • Please don't worry. It may seem a very emotional time now but you'll get through it ...like playgroup, nursery, primary school. Need I go on?
It is a real adventure for all starting in Sept. She will be in the same boat as all the rest!
I've done this with ds1, ds2 and dd. The first one is bound to be a little daunting for you, but as alreadt said- make the most of your day as well with some pampering.
    Hope you-and dd- cope
    Good luck

Hi, I work in a secondary and have spent most of the past few weeks meeting Year 6s to get to know them for September, we had our parents evening today and will be welcoming the students for the day tomorrow.

Don't worry about your daughter she'll be really well looked after, we've all had lots of practice at this and she'll be surrounded not only by lots of new friends but everything she sees will be new and exciting. We often find that children we thought would find the transition difficult take to secondary like a duck to water!

Awww thank you all for your lovely words!!! It went OK this morning, she was naturally nervous and they wouldn't let parents go past the school gate! I instinctively wiped the corner of my daughters eye (you know when you lick your finger first!) and the lady laughed her head off! Tesh thought it was funny too.

When I got back to the car I cried!! Not bawling, but I just kept thinking of her in that big school with all those older girls and wondering what she'd be thinking, how she'd be feeling!

Thank goodness it's my day off today, so I'll be waiting there for her to hear all about it!!

    How'd she get on?

My sons 8 & I've been fretting about secondary school for the past year already, daft isnt it! I know its coz I had such a bad experience at school that I'm just terrorfied he will as well, specially as personality-wise he's so much like me.

My daughter starts secondary school in september too and I feel exactly the same, she's still so little next to her friends who tower above her. She keeps saying she's scared she'll get lost finding her way around.

I don't know, it just doesn't seem right that the little baby I held 10 minutes ago is now going off to a great big school. I probably will drop her off and come home bawling, I did when she went away for a week on a school trip, I was useless until she came home. But like every other time in her life when I've felt scared, sad, worried, I'll give her a big hug, tell her it will be wonderful and keep smiling until I'm far enough away that she can't see my tears.

Tough being a mum sometimes isn't it. Especially when they go and grow up.
